Anyone ever lash up locomotives from different railroads. With all the unpowered units available, easy to assemble a weird combo. This combo was running on the S&Y RR this weekend. Lionel Legacy N de M Centipede and a Menards unpowered UP FP-9. Bill

Yep. Do it all the time! I get away with it cause I don't model a particular railroad. Like you said you see this all over. I have seen BNSF and UP on NS here in my are on the east coast.

Looks like a few nice scratch-built, possibly paper buildings in those photos seayakbill.

I thought that I must have created something of this kind but in fact my variation on the theme is combining engines that never ran together because they are different eras. Case in point is an SP "fantasy excursion train" combining steam and diesel power, originally 4 but in the end 5 engines:
For pure smoke power there's this UP double header:
I also once double-headed a Big Boy and #9000 UP 18-wheel steamer but I can't find my photos/video of that. It was a sacrilege because they pulled a set of Lionel NYC Superliners.

Sure... real railroads mix and use foreign power all the time. And they add diesel engines combined with steam engines for either reliability or power needs.
So why not us?
My son got this BNSF engine because we saw an NS train in real life with a BNSF diesel in the consist.
