Tell us what cameras and photo editing software you like. Just a basic cellphone camera, whatever Samsung model was in my pocket at the time, for taking pictures or videos, with the sole exception of a GoPro camera borrowed from my daughter to tape onto a gondola for a track-level view of the layout. For editing software, I also just use the basics: Paint and Photos for simple photo cropping and editing, and an old version of Movie Maker to assemble videos. Oh, and I ended up running the GoPro footage through an on-line slow motion conversion (which slowed the video while keeping the sound normal). That's about as exotic as I've gotten. OTOH, all my on-line photos and videos are unlisted, with no attempt or desire to attract attention to them generally, outside friends and as part of forum discussions.

My iPhone 14 is my only camera. I use Apple’s basic photo editing. For video editing I use iMovie on my Mac Book Pro.

I use either an iPhone 12 or a Nikon P5100 for photos. I use MS Paint for editing and other graphics work.

thinking about the Nikon18-300 lens for general purpose & wanna try rail fanning, Any thoughts ?
would like to pick up a D-850 body but having a hard time justifying that.

I just use my iphone X Max (aka, the 10). Yes, I am several generations behind, but it still works and I am cheapskate.

Jim, your choice for railfanning is a good one. My lens is old and no longer in production but it is an 70-300 which I use with a Nikon when chasing the real ones and it works just fine. When I'm doing model or diorama work I use a 55mm f/2.8-f/32 lens. It is all manual so no auto focus and you do need a good tripod when doing diorama work but the combination is great and the depth of field at f/32 is really something. I use Photoshop for image processing.

The P5100 is a sort of hybrid POS/DSLR, but doesn't do either very well. It's old and slow. I knew it was slow when I bought it, thinking there'd be workarounds...there aren't. I've been looking around for a nice second hand Nikon DSLR but haven't landed one yet. I find snaps from the iPhone to be generally adequate for most train shots. I do run into problems trying to take photos of things in motion, however, even in normal lighting. I need to learn how to adjust the settings on the iPhone, just haven't taken the time. Apple beats its chest over how intuitive the phone is, but I don't find that to be true of the camera bit. It's very powerful, I'll agree, but learning to really use it is a pain, at least for me. I haven't messed with add-on lenses since I gave up the old Minolta XG-9. I have a number of lenses that work brilliantly with that camera. Now that I've locked in on a developer that seems to do a decent job and offers digital files of each image, I might bust the Minolta out again. The incremental cost might work better for me than buying a "new" DSLR and investing in a bunch of lenses, not to mention teaching myself how to use it.

Cameras and software notwithstanding, one of the most important components that often go overlooked is good lighting.
My train room is in the finished lower level of our home. And the room initially had 8 high-hat lights in the drop-ceiling. Before the layout was assembled and the backdrops attached to the walls, I had dozens of Philips HUE lights installed on 3 circuits of track lighting. The HUE lights can be programmed to output different colors. So that's how I simulate nighttime train running with deep shades of blue light. Very effective.
But even the daytime running yields such a huge improvement, the room almost looks dark and dull if only the 8 high-hat lights provided by the builder are used to illuminate the trains. Once you go the route of LED track lighting, you'll never go back to basic room lighting.
My only regret is my wife and I chose a white drop ceiling and white track track lighting that's mounted on the light-color HVAC ducts and soffits. If I had to do everything again, I would have used black ceiling tiles, black tracks and black light heads.

Yes, clearly, I misspoke. Also, the software on the iphone to edit photos and create videos are more than good enough for me and don't cost anything if you already have the device.
