I've been getting these Lionel themed sets lately at some great prices. They aren't super fancy but IMO just fun!

There’s no problem Marty when you’re enjoying the hobby! It’s a great day when trains are running. Have fun!

Buying what you like and can afford is ok Marty. Those are neat sets from years ago and I enjoy seeing them again. Have fun with them. I myself enjoy all command engines but my financial condition now a days does not allow me to buy new. That's ok also because I have been buying items that I loved when they first came but by passed them. Now I find them for a much cheaper price. Yes they may not be legacy but again that's ok, tmcc was and is still very good and sound great. Now I'm spending my time putting certain types of trains together like my military train, my 1950's unit train of 40' box cars, maybe not exactly prototypical but they are 40' with great graphics, tank car train with mostly different road names, great graphics, and several others types of trains. Each set is ended with the correct caboose, must match engine. Not for everyone but I enjoy It and I don't have to spend alot of money. There are tons of freight cars out there that you can make up almost any consist.
At my age I'm having more fun then I should.

The GP20 is pretty basic but the GP9 is pretty cool. My biggest complaint with these 2 sets is the "laziness" of the rolling stock. Same cars numbered sequentially. They could have added some different art work. No cabooses for either set but I can find ones that will work. Again the price on these 2 sets especially were $200 for both so it was an easy purchase.
These won't be on the layout long as I'll be prepping it for the holidays but next year I hope to do a video of them on my channel. I have one more non holiday related video to shoot and then its that magical time of the year! This year someone on my channel asked if I could show all of my Polar Express trains I have so that will be a bit of a chore if I end up doing it.
Thanks for all the comments. In reality it's not really a problem. I have slowed down on the new stuff and the older stuff fills the void nicely.

I think Lionel/MTH did some tinplate sets with the Lionel Orange and Blue. They were pretty neat as well. Based on the interest in tinplate I doubt if they go for bargain prices.

I have 2 of those sets. 1 passenger w/ PS3 I run under the tree and another freight that is conventional. They are nice sets. MTH's tinplate was awesome.

There is an argument to be made about keeping the hobby simple, reliable and inexpensive.

There is an argument to be made about keeping the hobby simple, reliable and inexpensive. I know you didn't mean it that way, but I don't see the need for any argument: there are so many ways to enjoy the hobby that there's plenty of room for anyone to enter, and spend as much time (and yes, money!) in the area that they see value in investing. I suspect my *entire* financial 'investment' in trains over the past decades is less than some are willing to spend for a single high-end consist. To be clear, that's by my choice and inclination, not by necessity or lack of resources, and I have yet to regret the path I've chosen (largely PW Marx and O-27 profile track, and of late, scratch building and animation). There are plenty of remaining areas of interest for me to explore when/if the bug bites (command control systems, highly detailed scale rolling stock, operations, etc.), but for now I'm just enjoying a leisurely ramble through some of the toys that interested me as a kid.

Now you did it, MartyE !! I want more trains. Enjoy your trains! Absolutely! I have already greased and lubed both engines including the motors. Definitely some fun working on the Pullmors. The grease was surprising fine. Added a little to each. I'll probably put them away for now and get ready for my next video shoot. Then the holidays!
