I remember the Sears catalog of old. The race car and HO sets. Don't remember any Lionel trains but could be wrong. Those were the days.

I recall Lionel and Marx sets in the Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs, but never American Flyer. We were fortunate to have a Joe the Motorist's Friend store here in Westminster that had an extensive display of toy train stuff at the holidays. Here's an ad from the York store, a week before I was born:

Not surprised at all! It's a shame really. It is what it is. What seems to appeal to younger folks is fantastic/virtual reality. Model trains are firmly rooted in reality with the modest foray into RTR sets which do movie or Disney/Looney Toon etc branding. Given the restrictions of only offering variations of current and past consist type rolling stock and passenger cars to meet a given theme of film/series branding within which to improvise except for the movement of the train and perhaps some accessories model railroading is static. How do you compete against virtual reality which by comparison to the time and cost commitment of model railroading is inconsequential? The answer is you don't. That is the model train importer's problem. For us, the answer is quite simple. Sit back and enjoy what makes you happy.
