Just began my new layout build. Taking it slow this time. I started with the electrical work in the walls then covered it with peg board. Installed LED shop lights and built a 4.5 x 13ft table. I ordered a few background posters. Once they come in I’ll put them up. Right now I’m thinking of what I want to cover the table with. I’ll post more once work resumes.

I will let you know. Right now I was thinking of felt or Woodland Scenics sand colored mat. I figured the sand color would be good when blending in grass and ballast. BUT I'm not sure if I want to do all that landscaping again. We shall see what happens.......

A nice short-pile dark gray indoor/outdoor carpet is easy: Just sayin'...

The new table looks really good, Joe. On my old layout I covered the top with carpet padding and then used Woodland Scenics grass mat. I didn’t screw the FasTrack to the table. Since the track sections lock together they didn’t come apart in the 6 years I had the layout and the padding reduced running noise considerably. You can see the padding and grass mat in these pictures. For my table top I used 1” thick extruded styrofoam instead of plywood.

Hi Joe,
I just started a new layout as well. Curtis talked me into 1" foam board from the hardware store. I'm really liking it and as he said, you can stick trees, lights, signs, etc right into it... It's so convenient.
Just my 2¢
Take care
John

Just food for thought.
Carpeting for ground cover is & looks to thick, looks good on a floor. On the layout the proportions compared with the track, trains & the rest are out of scale wrong proportionally.
If your goal is to have a quick down & dirty cover over the ugly wood. I suggest you paint the bench work a dirt color (your choice). Adding ground cover over it blends better then plain wood.

I am also enjoying the suggestions. I am tired of the painted look. I just want a uniform covering to hide the wood, reduce some sound, and offer some track support. I don't do much in the way of scenery, so carpeting would be fine. If I did want additional color, I would paint over certain carpet sections, or glue ground cover, etc. When I mentioned the carpet idea to my wife, she said that the trains would not sound as clickety-clck-ish, and the grandkids would not like it as much. I am going to put an oval of track on a carpeted surface and remind myself about the sound being dampened too much. Alfred

I used indoor outdoor carpet I got at Lowes. It was not too thick and the sized worked out well with no seems on my 5X10 layout.

Keep up the good work. I am putting down track on the bare wood table top to try things out. The only issue is that once it's on, I won't want to take it off to put covering on. Right now, all of the wires for power, switches and accessories are running haphazardly on the surface. Alfred
