You know Adam you can run run all your command engines in conventional. Beings my Tiu from Mth took a crap a few years ago I run my MTH in conventional, they run great. I also run tmcc/legacy with the base1/cab 1 without any problems.

I also run tmcc/legacy with the base1/cab 1 without any problems. Dave This is true and I am keeping several MTH engines. But I prefer non-command control engines for one simple fact, I can actually repair them myself with minimal cost. When I got back into the hobby about 5 years ago, I was really excited about the vintage trains, the trains I had as a kid and my uncle had and shared with me. I bought some fixed them and got them back on the tracks. It was a blast! Then, somehow, I got caught up in the hype of the modern stuff. Don't get me wrong, they are great, but they just don't get me as excited as the older stuff. The magic of finding something at a train show for $10 that I can use really is fun. BTW, I am in high tech for my career, so maybe my desire to be low tech in my hobbies is part of my thinking here. Hobbies, for me, need to ae a departure from what I do hours every workday.

Update, so here is what I ended up doing. I found my box of pristine MTH RealTrax O-72 curves and switches and immediately started to replace the O-42 Curves on the out loop. Replaced 2 O-42 turnouts with O-72s as well. Now I can introduce my Scale Lionel TMCC Hudson J3a Hudson 5444 back on to the layout, as it and its scale 20th Century Limited Heavy weights including Dining Car sounds passenger cars require it. What is now a visible staging yard will become the Croton NY transfer from Steam to Electic and vice versa, since no steam is allowed in New York City. A Lionel TMCC NYC S1 will be the Electric Locomotive the 20th Century will get switched to at Croton for New York City operatons. Will also allow for Hudson locomotive maintenance area too. I am keeping some conventional trains that are parked on Electrically isolated sidings Not sure which roads will occupy those slots yet. Also, my Lionel Legacy WP F-3 will return pulling my beautiful silver scale Lionel Passenger cars (Sante Fe) as stand ins. The Lionel Legacy R30 Redbirds will stay as well on the Elevated Line. As soon as I can clean it all up, I will post some photos.

Another update, although my Lionel J3a TMCC 5444 hudson with pullmore runs just fine in conventional, I cannot get it to move using TMCC within the Legacy 990 system. It lights up, makes sound but wont move. Any ideas?

It used to run great in TMCC/Legacy, If I can figure out how to activate the diner sounds and station sound in conventional I wont look back.

Bring back the abacus! Simple is better in so many aspects of life.
IMO some aspects of O/O27/O scale model trains have gotten too complex for their own good. Increased complexity feature wise is the current sales model. For those striving for that go for it. Give me detail, give me engine sounds. The other chatter I can do without. The tactile operation of a big a_ _ transformer has the same mysterious appeal as the preparation to play a vinyl record. Sometimes increased realism diminishes imagination.
Imagination is what drives my interest in model trains and listening to music. There is no orchestra in my room, let alone a solo guitar player. Yet when I listen to my stereo system they are there.
When I run my trains I dwarf the engines and rolling stock that should otherwise dwarf me, it is imagination that switches those spatial relationships and makes me the more diminutive component of the experience.
For those expecting/requiring more realism in their trains functions, more power to you.
As for me, imagination is increasingly more attractive and with it simplicity.

Probably one of the few; there was never a need for remote control on my layout. From the gitgo, operation was kept simple so that reliability would be the highest. As a scenic presentation we just put the power on and everything runs just like on all the display layouts that you see. In my view conventional operation is economical, easy to fix and operates without problems. In our home remote technology is confined to my computer, TV and security systems but the backups are conventional there as well.

Update, still 100% conventional as my experiment with some MTH DCS and Lionel Legacy/TMCC was total failure. Despite numerous power connections and swapping out bad track, I am spending way too much time troubleshooting both Command Systems. Test ran my Lionel J3a Hudson in conventional and was please to see the Diner Sounds car works really well in conventional. Had some track leveling issues where the cow catcher on the Hudson would spark but was able to level the track and its fine now. I only have two O-72 turnouts and one of them seems bad. No matter how I try to get power to it, only the switch works but the rails are dead. So my roster now with those O-72 curves is as follows: Lionel scale NYC J3a Hudson Williams scale PRR F7 AA Lionel scale NYC S1 Two Williams scale PRR GG-1's (one Brown and one Green). Lionel Scale WP F3. The challenge will be using block sections and the ability to turn power on and off for each engines layover section. My Atlas O-Gauge Power Switch is no longer working, so I will have to use 4 MTH Z-1000's and a MRC O-27 Throttle Pack for each section and/or I can use an MTH Terminal block and one pair of MTH banana plug cables for quick disconnect and connect for each train and section and/or any combination there of that works best. For example, I can use one MTH Z-1000 and a MTH Terminal Block for 3 engines each, using 3 MTH Z-1000 transformer and 1 left over for something else as well as the MRC.

One of the reason I quite like LionChief locos and the Universal Remote (or the remote that came with the loco) is simplicity and reliability. Command control without a lot features, but without the limitations of conventional. Recent years products from LionChief 2.0+ and Legacy lines also work with the Universal Remote. And it's $50 so if your kid or grandkid or forceful adult damages it, no big deal.

Very busy Alfred, trying to get this done so I can start enjoying running trains. I love the whole LionChief concept and even own one, but dropped it and mangled the tender to engine connections. Still trying to fix that. Would have bought more but I already have too many trains and missed the LionChief products before Lionel raised their prices. Thus, no more buying except for maybe a Menards engines.

Vince, enjoy what you have. I do not buy any of the new equipment - I like what I have - and the prices are quite high. Alfred
