I am thinking my next train set is going to be a Santa Fe. The classic silver, red, and yellow design. My question is should I just buy the Lionel ready to run set at under $500 or is there another set that is in the same price range that would be better? maybe an older MTH set or something? I really would be fine with an engine, 2 or 3 cars, and the observation car. This is hard for me because over the years there have been so many produced. If you make a recommendation please tell me why you like it so much. Thanks.

Ed, since I have not followed the modern era train market(pricing and features), I don't have a recommendation. However, you made a good choice with the SF livery. I would get a set that at least had a dome car and some color on the cars. Alfred

The two most recent Lionel RTR Santa Fe sets have had a real winner motive power wise with two motors and a crisp colorful paint scheme.
The problem is that while the box art work may indicate striping on the passenger cars, there is none; just silver at least for the two most recent sets offered. However on the plus side Lionel is issuing add on cars such as a vista dome, and a dummy B unit for this set. I own the set which I used in a pinch for my Christmas theme layout and I was very pleased with the appearance and performance.
That said, I was able to pick up some appropriately scaled NOS Lionel individual passenger car with the Santa Fe striping you would and which I prefer. That may be an option at a modest cost if your time and patience will permit.
The Santa Fe set is iconic especially if you were born in the 50s. I recall reading that it was the most popular set that Lionel produced by a large margin. If you set up a train around the holidays it was most likely the Santa Fe set which became synonymous with Christmas for many kids.
Bright, shiny, colorful. What's not to like?

As a followup,, Pat's Trains and perhaps others are selling engine and remote from some starter sets; the Santa Fe engine being one of them. Quantities are unknown. This is a Lionel offering not a dealer set breakup as I understand it. 6-84720s is the item number.

Look at the Menards F7 units. They have them in Santa fe, Pennsylvania, Milwaukee rd and CNW. They have sound , crew talk, bell sound etc. Plus a remote plus a wall wart.
