Years ago I was covering a NBA game in Sacramento and thought it would be cool to take the train to LA for our next job.
Flying including time in the airport about 4 hours.
Driving about 9 hours via Highway 1 (Scenic Route)
The train was around 16+ hours if I remember correctly.
We ended up flying. Cheaper too. Same with trying to take my daughters to NYC for the holidays. 12 hours or more by Amtrak.

Use to have trackage more directly to Chicago going North and South to Miami. I remember as a kid the family going each year. All that trackage has probable been torn up. If the trackage was more direct, in a heartbeat I would be going to Illinois to visit friends and events many times over in a year. Can't imagine 2 days to and 2 days back. Were we drive to in Illinois takes 16 hrs one way and don't have to rent a car. Flying is faster, but one time due to delays it took 2 1/2 days to return to Jacksonville from Chicago.

Get a compartment and eat in the dining car (if the train offers such). Meet some terrific people and enjoy a civilized trip, as compared to sitting behind the wheel of a car for a very long stretch, or being treated like cattle by the airlines/TSA. Best trip I ever took with my children was Baltimore to Orlando on the Silver Meteor...twenty-three years later, they still talk about it.

The old Floridian/South Wind that went from Chicago to Miami did have a direct route South through, Nashville TN, Bowling Green, KY Louisville Ky, Birmingham AL Montgomery, ALm Waycross, GA and across Southern GA to FL. It was one overnight leaving at 9:15 AM and arriving in Miami around 3 PM. It was a 29 hour trip and a more convenient route. The new Floridan takes 47 hours over two nights. That isn't good. I cannot see this route being popular. Most of the tracks are still in use for freight,
