Morning y'all! I can't find the passenger cars in the livery I want, so I am thinking of trying to microwave some O Gauge cars as an experiment for reducing them in size, after removing the metal parts.
Perhaps microwaving these cars will reduce them in size, only I'm not certain how long to heat and what power setting to use?

No, no, NO! *Never* microwave stripped cars! Instead, just soak them in scalding hot -- nay, boiling -- water, then clip them on a clothesline outside until they stiffen up like a board. Note: this technique works better in the depths of winter (more shrinkage) . . .  |

Will the curmudgeons take it easy with my topic. Currently we have rainy weather; I am practically finished with large outdoor projects including repeatedly lifting/placing 50 lb plus rocks for Mrs Red Jimmy.
Shoveling river gravel; hand splitting extra large stumps n pieces (too large for the wood splitter)...AHHHH, a rainy day, some rest for a sore 68 yr old....thinking of trains. And always ready for some tomfoolery...
You folks enjoy this day!

Easy answer to your original post. Use your splitter to get to the size you want.

I was already in the depths of design/build for the balance of the Cambridge Creek bridge project for the RFC train garden, and had been idly thinking of a candidate for my next project: creating an animated burning building scenario for the train garden, as a tribute to the volunteer fire company who has organized the train garden for the better part of a century, and in whose old station house we are currently housed. So, it was but a small thermal leap to jump on (in?) your clown car when it came lurching by!

Easy answer to your original post. Use your splitter to get to the size you want. A trash compacter works even better -- you can do a whole train at once, and there are fewer splinters! [Hmm -- am I beginning to detect a theme of hidden aggression and frustration towards the objects of our obsessions?  ]

And I thought I harbored creative tomfoolery. Josef, I never even thought of using my splitter!
I really shouldn't use a microwave to reduce train car size, as Mrs Red Jimmy oversees how I use our appliances! I thought using our Ron Popeil vegomatic would work...that was a no go. She is on to me...

Easiest way to shrink stuff (I am an expert at it) is to use the washer and dryer, on the hottest setting. Works every time!

Yep, about 700 to 1,000 of them (watts, that is), for the average microwave . . .

I have my doubts as to scale accuracy - after microwaving, one end might be HO scale and the other could be N scale. I suggest a good soak and throw them in the clothes dryer. At least you’ll get some excess length knocked off the ends…

I would ditch the microwave and use the Air Fryer... it's faster and tastes better.
