From what I've read, it seems that most of us with the Lionel 11103 Southern Ps-4 4-6-2 are dealing with tender truck zinc pest. I saw my truck frames starting to swell, but things got real when one of the wheelsets fell out. Guess it was time to do something. I was hoping to get the same part from one of the later runs of the same model, but none were available (big surprise). I did some poking around, and noticed similar 6-wheel trucks on the tenders of the early scale 2-8-2 (not the newer K-Line derived mikados). I bought two at last year's part sale, with associated parts for pickup rollers, etc., and was pleased to discover that they were an almost direct swap-in. "Almost", because I had to dremel off some material from the bolster to lower the ride height. Here you can see the new truck on the left, and the old one on the right:
The only problem was the trucks are slightly longer, and hit the front steps even on O72 curves. I removed from metal from the trucks and steps, which you can't even see, to solve the problem. While I was at it I added a Kadee, and here's the finished product:
Just putting this info out there to hopefully help a few people with shelf queen Ps-4s!

Nice fix, ….I’ve repaired a few of these now……….I gave up trying to get parts from Lionel. Everything for these sort of jobs is either NLA, or not listed,……I use MTH trucks on them now, it’s a little more work re-routing wiring, etc,….but I just saddle up & take the ride,…..

Saw quite a few of these at York over the years with the same issue. I had to pass. Now with a known solution I might pick one up. Did you happen to know the PN you used as a Lionel replacement?

The trucks are from the 18030 Frisco mikado. I just looked and don't see a parts breakdown on the Lionel website any more - maybe I'm missing something. Some of those mikados had 4-wheel tender trucks, some had six like this. The original trucks were completely dust, but so far no other parts on the loco or tender seem affected. Might be worth getting one for a good deal!
