I just received my new M1. I believe this is an MTH boiler/casting. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks!

I dunno, but Lionel already had a pretty nice M1 from the TMCC era,…

I asked Dave Olson and his response: "It’s a modified Lionel M1b boiler. We tooled a lot of new slides for it."

For those who need more TEMPTATIONS... here's a video Mr. Muffin's Trains posted a few hours ago. The passenger version is a real beauty. UGHHHHH!!!! All this stuff is arriving at once!!!!
BTW, according to the catalog, tenders with 4 or 6 wheels run on O-54. The longest tender with 8 wheels will require O-72. I tried embedding the YouTube video, but it didn't show up in the final post. (I hate being a slave to technology.) So I just posted the link above, which will take you to the YouTube video. Enjoy!!!

The passenger version was calling my name but fortunately I did not answer.

wmliev reports an error vs. the prototype. Lionel for whatever reason, omitted the upper steps on the pilot. Now, this omission won’t bother some folks, but those looking for scale accuracy, will find this error detracts from the model,…….if this was a NYC model, I’d be an ill SOB!…

While someone like me would miss the step omission having never seen the real thing, color scheme and other cosmetic gaffs are harder to accept.

Agree Chuck, and to some folks it’s not a bother, maybe on a traditional sized locomotive it’d be ok, but for the prices they’re whacking us over the head for scale locomotives, I’d expect some scale accuracy, ……the reason I say this, is when you watch the Lionel product introduction videos Ryan & Dave both do, they seem to pride themselves on checking accuracy etc,……I watched the LCCA’s visit to the NC facility, and especially paid attention when they went to the art department for a meet & greet, and Ryan touted how they work so hard to get the artisan work accurate …….So, where’s the break in the chain? The gaffs just keep piling up, ……seems somebody at the big L isn’t keeping their eye on the ball,…..the big picture is when the gaffs outweigh the wins, the ship will eventually sink……

Totally agree. Considering the two videos that Ryan Kunkel did extolling the accuracy of Strasburg #90 and the 20th Century proclaiming to the effect that both were the most accurate versions ever to appear in O scale and other hyperbole which was not reflected in the finished product; it seems to me that Lionel is a victim of friendly fire. The expectations they create in their marketing does not always result in fact.
The result is unrealized/unrealistic expectations which create client/prospective buyer discontent.
The irony is that then the client/prospect are blamed for being too critical.
Compounding the problem is the inconsistency of the products that Lionel delivers, making the BTO model a crap shoot.
While other model train importers may suffer from the same scenario, it seems that Lionel receives the majority of criticism.
If so there must be a reason.

I think I could look beyond this error and possibly 3-D print something up if it really made me upset. As far as cost. Lionel is going to push the limit on what they can charge no matter what they release. Look at the Triplex or the woodside passenger cars... crazy prices.
Their "accuracy" has been a total miss at best with some of their color selections. Even after countless people who have sent color plaques in for verification for upcoming releases.
Hold on to your hat. The Hiawatha is coming out and I did NOT PREORDER because of this color debacle and factory errors. I am hoping for the best, then will order a set after things look acceptable.

I'm not as big a critic for the very fine, road-specific details as I am the more basic slip-ups. But I can understand how some of you would frown on details that are overlooked in production.
The one touchy spot for me in recent years that is pretty much a deal-breaker on steam engines has been the chalky-looking, primer gray color used on the boiler and smoke boxes. Nothing more than that screams "O-27 starter engine" on an otherwise well-detailed scale model. Thankfully, Lionel's factory has avoided that "appearance" on steamers that have caught my eye in 2023/2024 catalogs. Although the catalog illustrations still aren't 100% accurate, the recently delivered scale steamers have a pleasing darker satin gray or bright silver smoke box... depending on the model.

Here is some video of the M1 and its sister locomotives in action. Fun night at Mikes with the Detroit Three Railers meet.

If you do purchase one of the new Pennsylvania M1 locomotives, pay close attention to the tender wiring and assembly of the roller arms where they attach to the truck. Mine were loose and the wiring was pinched in the tender. The sound would work for all of 30 seconds and cut out after the locomotive started to move.
Lionel's quality control is the worst for goods that cost this much.
