I want to do the most maintenance I can to my train. Where can I find the right source to go about care and maintenance. Including minor repair or service work. Like connections train wants to stutter, when it does light stutters with it. Yet the connection when it is great it is strong and the train hauls ass. Always goes back to a stutter.

When's the last time you cleaned your track?

When's the last time you cleaned your track? Aside from regularly cleaning the track something that is overlooked and can cause the kind of stutter and light issue you describe is unclean locomotive/car wheels. A residue inevitably builds up because they are in contact with a current conducting track. They are a little tedious to clean but once done the issue stops in my experience. I use ordinary isopropyl alcohol to clean mine and sometimes the residue is a lot more than you could see just by looking at the wheel surface.

This depends on the train. Is it conventional (transformer controlled only), or does it have digital control boards? Many things overlap, but each has specific needs outside of the common requirements. The type of locomotive will determine the suggested source.

Not trying to pick on you, as a lot of people have done this some where in there collecting. The way you asked is like going into a auto parts store and say my car is shuddering, what can I do to fix it, and they would ask you make & type here we ask manufacture, number on the cab. this will give you better answer. Now other than mentioned, if it has TMCC/DCC/Legacy in it, it could be a bad signal problem. Yes as mentioned I would start cleaning the track, drive wheels and even the middle pick-up with alcohol.

Yeah, the flickering light (especially the headlight on a TMCC/Legacy engine) will indicate a signal problem but that can arise from track/wheel residue. On the theory that simpler is always better as a starting point stick with a cleaning first.

Trainz actually offers a course for Lionel and MTH repairs. It is web based so you can pace yourself at a comfortable speed.

That I believe has a can motor so you really can't open it and clean it. They are very durable motors. You can get a little grease ( I use red and sticky ) and put a small amount on the gears you see. The only thing you might have to deal with is the electronic E-Unit but even that is rare. as your rail road grows, you will probably get more expensive and compilated engines and control system.
