At our place Corner Field Model Railroad Museum & Trading Post Train Shop, I run engines most times, like diesels, with no smoke coming out at all because a lot of public do not like the smell of it. It's gotten to the point that even some of the steam locomotives I shut the smoke off. Well here is a great example, LOL, of how sometimes people can be a little crazy.
So this photo below I took of the MTH NKP 765 I had running at our museum. Well their was a woman that was with her family enjoying the layout up until the engine passed her with the smoke. She turned to me and said these exact words...... ""Please turn that smoke off, it's changing my hair color"". She ended up leaving and continuing to complain about that the smoke will change her hair color. That's crazy in my opinion.
If anyone wants to hear more funny stories, I've got plenty to share of what people have told me that I'm sure you will get a laugh with.

My wife hates the smell of smoke and if I’m telling the truth I don’t particularly care for it either. Today’s locomotives put out so much smoke they fog and stink up a room very quickly. But, while I find today’s smoking engines unpleasant I’ve never heard of it changing anyone’s hair color.

Your story reads like a Karen at a train store or meet. Mrs Red Jimmy isn't too fond of my smoking engines or cabeese, yet will enjoy it for awhile. My Karen story is about the dummass that HAD TO ACCOMPANY her little dumass to see my trains running. This was at the behest of the grandma (real sweet woman) asking for ONLY THE GRANDSON to see my Carpet Central. Despite asking them to stay sitting, DUMAASSES mom and spoiled son proceed to walk over, and sit on the layout...yup, stupidly on the tracks. If my wife was wasn't present I would've pulled them out of my house by their ears. For those dopes, that was their only visit. And yes they knocked over some trains..

I don't get the complaints about smoke smell because of the different mega-steam scented smokes out there. My wife doesn't like the original smoke, so I started trying out different scents. Her favorite, so far, is the coffee. But there have been new scents released since I bought my last smokes a few years ago, so we may find a new favorite this year. Although she likes some of the scents, she doesn't like fogging up the living room at Christmas because she has sinus issues, and smoke that dense bothers her. So, I keep the smoke output at a medium or low level.
Now when my older sister came for Christmas one year, and my wife was at the store, we cranked the smoke up and she loved it. But then, she grew up with Lionel trains under the tree in the late 50's, so smoke is a fond memory.
