Does anybody have a fix for the loose slack in the lumber retaining stakes on the hinged side of the lumber car #3461? These stakes lean to the outside at about 30 degrees. A lot of slack. I’ve thought about putting a small spring there, but there is no place to connect a spring. This car was in my first set from 1950, I’ve had it so long, I’m attached to it.

Is this like what you described?: If so, ISTM there would be some sort of a stop underneath holding the stakes upright until a dump is triggered. If so, it should be possible to fabricate a small wedge to go between the stakes and the stop to hold the stakes in a more upright position. Once test-fitting has demonstrated an adjustment to your satisfaction, a drop of superglue should be sufficient to hold the wedge in place. Unfortunately I don't have one to experiment with, but a few pics underneath showing the activating mechanism might help with problem solving. Good luck, in any eventt!

Good picture! That is exactly what I am talking about. After a closer inspection with a magnifying glass I found the slot in the frame is worn and the cam is probably worn too. The combination of the two worn parts in what is likely causing the post to tilt outward. I can replace the cam but the frame will have to stay worn. Thanks for your comments.
