Lionel’s latest Legacy #844 FEF-3 kept calling my name. And I finally weakened, which means more trains must move out at the November Allentown ATMA show. So be on the lookout. LOL!!!
Most of the steamers I’ve purchased in recent years have been colorful, fantasy “what if” models. But the #844 is as prototypically black as one can get — with a nice glossy paint finish right out of the shops. And as an added treat, I sprung for John Brady’s Legacy Aux Tender as well — keeping the appearance of platinum bearing caps consistent from loco to tender to aux tender.
It’s a really sharp and classy look, with the UP “Building America” flag literally jumping right off the aux tender’s satin black paint. Just magnificent!
Model #844 also comes with solid black elephant ears. But I prefer to let the steamer’s detail come through without them — not to mention that Lionel’s factory has been FINALLY getting the smoke box gray coloring right. So why would I want to hide it??!
Here are some iPhone snapshots from tonight’s maiden voyage. Enjoy!!!

Very nice, I really like the 844 and the Brady tender really sets it off. Good luck with it.

I have to say that the tender caught my eye more than the gloss black 844. I have an earlier black Legacy version of UP 8444 (top in the photo below) and am thinking about it with that tender . . .

Weren't you just saying that the 4th quarter was going to be tough train expense wise? You may as well add 3rd quarter to the list of pain with this purchase and your Triplex on the way! As one of my customers said years ago, 'Money is conspicuous by its' absence'.

I had exactly the same thought but in my case I would like to thank RockyM profusely for bringing the Flagged black UP AWT to my attention . . .

As an added incentive, JB is having a 12% end-of-summer sale now. And that custom-run tender is included. Hint… hint!!!

Unfortunately, the code AUG24 doesn’t appear to be working today, and I tried it on a variety of items. I’m surprised, because I thought it would be good thru the end of the month. You might want to call the store.

The flag on the tender looks very similar to the one Menard's used on their UP F3 engine. Only in reverse.
It looks like you have quite a few tinplate structures on your layout. (Love it) Maybe you could post some more pictures featuring those buildings. ??
