I now live about a mile and a half from a freight grade crossing. The horn signal from passing freights is easily heard, even when the windows are closed. It is a great sound that I enjoy listening to – it’s even better when you are outside. Last Thursday, I was unable to sleep and I was wide awake from about 2:30 AM to 4 AM. During that time four freight trains passed through. That is a first; most often, you only get one freight in the early morning hours. There is nothing like the plaintive sound of a diesel horn – it brings so many thoughts of trains to mind. Alfred

I know what you’re saying, Alfred. I could hear the trains when we lived in Poughkeepsie, NY. Our community was a mile or two east of the Hudson River at the crest of a hill two or three hundred feet high. We could easily hear the horns and the rumble of the trains on the west bank of the river that were about three miles away. The river is about a mile wide there and it magnified the sound. It wasn’t very loud but quite clear, especially at night when there were no competing sounds.
Where we live now is quiet. I’m not complaining about the quiet. It’s very nice and relaxing but I do miss the sounds of the trains.

Joe, that is a cool recollection. I for one, am glad that the FRA "Quiet Zone' rule is not applied here. I have come to recognize one engineer. He uses a distinctive horn pattern at grade crossings. He gives two long blasts, followed by two very short blasts (rather than one short blast), then one long blast. Alfred

I'm in a valley and about 4 miles from the tracks. There are a series of crossings, and you can hear the train coming, getting to the closest crossing, and then going.
On good nights when the conditions are right you can hear the rumbling for the cars on the tracks.
My wife and I agree, that if we ever move, we MUST be near tracks.

I live a mile from the Dover, NJ train station/yard. I hear loud and clear horns when they are assembling trains, usually 3-5 am

I don’t live that far from a railroad crossing where I live. I like hearing train horns in the evenings!
