A fun & realistic upgrade to our 3 rail models is adding 2 rail scale pilot wheels on the pilot trucks, thus getting rid of the puny pizza cutters they come with stock. Your track type, and curves will dictate whether you can or can not apply this upgrade to your fleet. Obviously, you can’t run the thinner 2 rail wheel sets on old school Lionel tube track, so y’all get the idea,…….These examples belong to our good friend superwarp1. To accurately portray the correct look, all the axles are flush mounted in my lathe, and then center drilled just like the prototype. Whenever possible, I strive to use the most accurate wheel based on prototype pictures, be it flat faced, angle faced, or dished. Each mfr. had their own way of casting and turning wheels. Pictures are before and after airbrushing ….. Pat The Water Level Route Attachments:

Always nice to see your work Pat and I agree, the tiny pilots are a distraction for an otherwise nice model. I can't work with 2 rail flanges, but larger wheels would be nice.
Thanks for posting/sharing.

Beautiful work! It makes a big visual difference. Might have to have you improve a few pilot trucks of mine one of these days...

Pat, if the discoloration on your thumbnail is any indication of the effort exerted to do this, I will definitely have you do the work! Ouch.

They run through my Ross switches with a little bounce but I don’t notice it. The two rail pilot trucks are for my Kline berks and one four pilot for one of my Hudsons.

I just gotta get to retirement from the day job, and these turn around times will be a night & day difference. I’ve got a gazillion locomotive projects waiting in the wings, ……if I had 4-5 hours a day to devote to this stuff, I could roll through these locomotives like Grant through Richmond,……😁 Pat The Water Level Route

To finalize Gary’s little job, he needed an assortment of drawbars in varying shorter lengths for his 3rd Rail Niagara,……I cut him some new ones from some slightly thicker brass stock, then blackened the parts for a durable finish,….. Pat The Water Level Route
