Lionel released early photos of their plasma-coated Polar Express Berk, which they say is still on target for delivery in late-October 2024. Here's the graphic from their email blast this morning...
This was on the very short-list of pre-orders I made from the 2024 Vol 1 catalog. So I'll be curious to see how close in appearance this steamer really is to last year's Lionel store-exclusive "Locomotive of the Year". The lighting makes ALL the difference with the plasma coating, as different viewing angles can give the impression of different variations in color.

If I was a Polar Express guy this would be the engine I would buy and get rid of all the other PE Berks that I had.

It’s a beautiful engine for sure.

I really like the engine but I think the drive wheels color could be better.

Not for me, but I do love the idea of scale sized fantasy trains.

In the proper light I'll wager it looks like the Northern lights!

I really like the engine but I think the drive wheels color could be better. Not to worry -- they'll likely be different on the real engine anyway!

My guess based on your videos of the LoY compared to these photos is that the PE will be a richer, deep and darker palette color wise. Less flashy but more subtle and ultimately more satisfying in the long run. Excellent choice.

I really like the engine but I think the drive wheels color could be better. Dave I agree, Dave. The rims could have had a subtle highlight on them. White would have been too harsh, but perhaps platinum would have been really cool. Once again, the delivered model is different enough from the catalog illustration to give enthusiasts pause to pre-order. But since I have the plasma-coated "locomotive of the year" from 2023, I expected variations as a matter of course. October 2024 isn't too far away... so we'll know soon enough what's REALLY DELIVERED.
