I'm having some issues with my coal turbine. When I go from idle to forward, it runs a few seconds as normal, then it sudden acts like it had a power interruption and loses sync and the engine and the turbine try to go opposite directions and fight each other. I've tried taking it off power to reset it and it didn't work, so I did the step 18 reset and it works initially, then it does it all over again. I have a BCR in it and let it sit a bit before I run it to charge it a bit and don't think it's causing my issue. Anyone have any experience or idea what could be causing this? All my other engines run perfectly normal on the same track.

Top suspect would be the tethered connection. Could be a loose tether socket, not fully seated, or a solder joint that has come loose. Sometimes hard to catch in the act. One trick I like to do looking for an intermittent solder joint failure is to turn all the lights off in the room, and attempt to run the engine, ……I usually can catch the faint spark where a solder joint loses it’s connection.

My coal turbine was originally PS1 converted to PS2 (both boards so it doesn’t have the original slave unit in the B/turbine unit). However the tether is the original one and I’m always worried that it will fail because the housing at the join between units is partly damaged, it doesn’t fit together easily and either a pin or solder joint could easily be damaged in trying to fit the connectors together. It would also be my top suspect because of the weird behavior of a power interruption that seems to make the turbine unit go into reverse. If there’s a bad solder connection it could be at either end of the tether but I’d look first at the join, where the solder points should be visible.

One thing with MTH tethers, is the boards that the tethers plug into, the solder joints can crack and become intermittent. Even if you can’t see cracks they could be. I would touch them up with a iron and a little bit solder.
