Most of you recall my custom GP38 project. It was running great until yesterday. At slow speeds (1-5 speed steps) it would lurch and shutter. There was some improvement from 5-10 steps but still a noticeable movement that was not smooth. It did not smooth out until I increased the throttle to more than 10 speed steps. I thought it was something electrical with the board inside. Upon inspection after opening a number board light wire and worked its way over the motor flywheel just enough to effect slow speeds. At 10+ speed steps, the flywheel was moving fast enough to break free of the wire. Check out the damage the flywheel did to the blue shrink wrap. Glad I caught this. I replaced the shrink wrap, re-routed the wire and am back in business.

Ron, that's what modeling is all about. Not just running trains, being able to figure out a problem and fixing it.
Of course there issues that require a repair tech, but dealing with the small things as aggravating as it can get is very satisfying when you fix it.

I agree on both counts but it is intensely frustrating when the issue is not something mechanical that you can see, for instance a radio signal problem. Still, some Lionel engines in the past have come from the factory with flywheel contact problems and you can only blame poor engineering and/or assembly - mostly the latter.

Glad it was an easy fix. I find it is usually the most basic thing, but for some reason I over-think and it ends up being the last thing I check.

I've never had a problem with my trains stuttering but every now and then will offer up an appreciative whistle when my wife walks into the train room.

Ron, certainly a satisfying feeling when you successfully troubleshoot. Alfred
