As is often the case be it forum posts or online reviews, the folks who had or feel that they had negative experiences far outnumber those who were satisfied/pleased. Human nature? Who knows.
Anyway as I was enjoying a relaxing breakfast this morning an incident many years ago popped into my head for no reason which I would like to recount.
In what was likely the very early days of BTO I preordered a pricey engine from a small but active husband/wife train dealer in the Carolinas with whom I had a number of interactions/transactions.
After the engine had started showing up at other dealers and not hearing from my dealer I tried to reach them w/o success. It did not take even me long doing some searches to discover that unbeknownst to me the store had abruptly gone out of business. My deposit was gone. The circumstances of the closure were not clear however skullduggery (I like that word) was not suspected.
Over a period of several weeks I contacted Lionel who put me in touch with the distributor who served this dealer. Even though the distributor had likely not received any money for my preorder from this dealer, they offered to credit my deposit towards the purchase of the engine which they would then sell to me directly at a discounted price, or refund my deposit.
Now that is consideration!
Do you have a positive experience (recent or otherwise) with a dealer, importer, distributor that you would like to share? Then this thread is for you.

This is a tall order. The reason that there are so many negative reviews is that people rightly think that the rest of us should be warned if they have had serious trouble with a seller/importer.
In fact off the top of my head I can only think of two positives: (1) Years ago The Train Station somewhere way out east (Mountain Lakes, New Jersey) accepted my decision to cancel an order for a Lionel Genset that did not have the proper sound and smoke features and applied my payment to a VL GE Evo, which is the finest diesel I have ever had (or ever will). The problem was a misleading Lionel catalog description, which must be very awkward for a dealer. This dealer's archives are also a great resource on Lionel product history. (2) Steve a.k.a. Mr Muffin's Trains of Atlanta, IN, at my request inspected a Lionel steamer that was reputed to be arriving with a pre-depleted coal load (i.e. the coal had substantially come unstuck in shipping) and found it to be OK, which it was when I received it.
That said, I have never had the experience of some fly-by-night trying to rook me on a model train purchase but I've always avoided any sellers I think might be questionable and my buying days are now very few and far between.

In my early days of acquiring the trains I wanted I always stuck with known dealers like Nicholas Smith, Hennings, Charles Ro and a few others. I knew they were not going anywhere and were reasonable when pricing items. Never a problem with any item. When the first scale gg1's were delivered I had one shipped by Charles Ro. It was shipped by FEDEX and left at my door. When I saw it the damage to it was very obvious. It was as flat as a pancake if you can imagine that. I called Charlie Ro and the Father at the time sent me a label at the time to return it. He immediately sent me a replacement. He told me at the next York that he talked to FedEx and asked why they would ever deliver a box in that condition. They lost that account because of their non answer. It had to be run over by some type of vehicle. But the whole issue was how it was handled by Charles Ro, I had a new one in two days, no hemming and hawing. Total class taking care of it. That's why I bought alot of trains from Charlie Ro.
