COMPETITION!!!!!
LIONEL right now has no competition to keep them in check. Since no other companies are around to compete with them they can basically charge what they want and build what they want. Bad for the consumer!!!
MTH is just a shadow of themselves and no real competition to Lionel now.

What they really need is a time-machine...1953 looks pretty good right now.

I think Menards has them by the tail on the low-end custom engines for O-27, cars and buildings are up in coming as well! Go Menards.

2004 would be a good date, if it was 2004 I'd be a heck of lot younger!!

There is an abundance of O gauge trains on the secondary market, so there is no worry about the exorbitant prices of new Lionel equipment. There large collections and thousands of lightly used and NOS trains available. As the baby boom generation relocates, downsized and thins, there many collections coming on the market almost daily. I have viewed trains as a vehicle to provide a historical presentation or collection. You need not have engines that cost thousands to accomplish that. While owning more trains than could ever be used, run or displayed; my money is better spent on first class travel, classic cars, specialized antiques and other collections that provide better value. Let Lionel charge whatever they want. Obviously people continue buying so the prices are probably too low. The bottom line is that you can enjoy the model train hobby on any budget.

I don’t have enough knowledge on the subject to even be dangerous 😜 but I’ll assume there aren’t any dumb questions…
I know the demand is out there, but does Lionel not get feedback from its dealers on this dash to ever more high-end products? Most folks in my strata of the hobby take one look at a Lionel catalog, shake their heads and walk away (myself included). Will there ever be some point where the law of diminishing returns kicks in? I agree. Also my thought is, they are raising their prices each year on engines and cars do to because of this plus Lionel is a big market name for model trains.
