Over on Harry Henning’s “O Gauge Tips & Tricks” Facebook page, someone posted news from Scott Mann that 3rd Rail will no longer produce brass steam engines due to production and materials costs. Their last brass steamer — already in production — is reportedly a C&O Allegheny 2-6-6-6 which carries a $4,800 price tag.
Can’t help but wonder when Lionel’s manufacturing factories will make high-end, die-cast (or brass hybrid) model train production no longer feasible. Obviously, Lionel doesn’t think they’re there yet.

Everything has a limit and a shelf life. If accurate the 3rd Rail announcement may be a harbinger for the other model train importers. Your customers wallets unlike apparently the La Brae tar pits are not bottomless.

Some time ago, as in last year or maybe even earlier, Scott intimated that 3rd Rail saw the way of their future, at least in O scale 3rail, as diesels - probably plastic-bodied. I can't remember if this was in an email flyer or a forum posting. But I would not be surprised if the information rockymountaineer has passed on is accurate. It's a small market, manufacturing and transport costs have skyrocketed and so there is a limit to what an importer can do.
Personally I would not place any great faith in Lionel filling the perceived gap. I am more concerned about what this might mean for GGD passenger cars.

Scott and I talked about somethings earlier in the year. He informed me the costs we're the main issue and the tooling for the older Steam engines are long gone.
