I've been working on the layout All the live-long day. I've been working on the benchwork Just to pass the time away. Can't you hear the drill bit turning, Rise up so early in the morn; Can't you hear the jigsaw buzzing, Dinah won’t you blow, Dinah won’t you blow, Dinah won’t you blow the saw dust away. Saw dust on the floor, Saw dust in the air, Saw dust everywhere, where, where, where. I’ve Been Working on the Railroad was written in 1894 and found in a Princeton University songbook. The earliest recording was in 1923 by the Shannon Quartet on Victor Records. Attachments:

I completed the two sides (12’ each)of the benchwork with three legs each. Joined them together with 56” connection at the center. (Joint is shown.) The end connections on each side have not been made; however, I placed a 3’ x 6’ sheet of plywood on top for fun. (Shown in photo.) At this point, about 42’ of 2” x 4” and 25 #12 1 ½” screws have been used. 3 screws were runed and replaced. The Phillips heads were stripped. The drill head was slightly too small and did not seat securely. It worked on other screws for the most part; until I found a better drill head that fit better. (Two comments: There are far too many screw head types. Also, I believe the quality of metal used now for screws is poor.) Some of the techniques I used: a 1” x 4” x 6” piece of wood with 3 drilled holes as a pattern template and guide for keeping the bit at 90 degrees, and doing pilot holes. (I was really fancy and countersunk holes.) To make joints, I used a 90 degree metal :”L” and “T” level to adjust joints properly. (This tool is my favorite keepsake of my father’s.) I used the Measure App in Level mode on my VoiceOver enabled phone. Alfred ) _ Attachments:

I have the same tool, Alfred. I just used it earlier this week when I added a shelf to the pantry.

I like the way you are cutting wood of using a good old fashion hand saw. Most people today use a circular saw. Keep the updates coming. I like viewing progresses of people's layouts.

The benchwork is complete. I installed 3 stabilizing struts this morning on the 2” x 4” frame. The benchwork is robust and very stable. This evening, I hauled in a 4’ x 7’ plywood panel (15/32”). Three of the four pieces are on the table top. Tomorrow, I am going to lay out some track on the large end of the table to confirm that I can accomplish what I had envisioned for the nested O72 wide radius track loops. I can likely trim off some wood to make access around the perimeter even roomier. (Actually, my son will have to do the trimming; he has the circular saw and a good pair of eyes.) Also, I will have to patch some nicks I made on the edge of a corner of drywall. Good Night. Alfred

I am concerned about asking my wife to see the progress. I'm afraid that she will say - Did you know that there is a gash in the ceiling and the window is cracked? Alfred
