With me getting deeper into dead rail, I am starting to convert cars over to Kadee couplers. Even though I no longer need 3 rail track, my son, daughter and visitors still run 3 rail track powered engines, so I'm not migrating to 2 rail track. I started looking as 2 rail freight cars from Atlas. They look great. They don't run too bad on my scaletrax, but the scale wheels definitely don't like the deep frogs on switches. They bounce quite a bit at slow speed and will derail at moderate speed. The trucks attach to the car body the same but the width is slightly different on 2 rail compared to 3 rail, so you can't just swap out wheel sets. The whole truck must be swapped out. A set of 3 rail trucks with hi rail wheels from Atlas can cost $30 or more. But I found some great Atlas cars on trainz.com where I can swap trucks and wheel sets. Then the plan was to swap out the trucks and then sell the donor car. I got this Blue B&M car on Trainz for $23. But the darn thing looks so good, I want to keep it. I was kind of hoping it would look terrible. But it looks brand new. So I still need 3 rail trucks. Any 2 railers out there want to trade??? Ron

Some years ago I tried using two rail wheel sets on my high rail layout but it just does not work with 3 rail track no matter what kind you have. Its best just to use 3 rail trucks and detail the car like its two rail and using two rail couplers. Kadee 804 or 805 seems to work the best.

I don’t blame you for wanting to keep the B&M boxcar, Ron. It’s a beauty as is the Raritan River boxcar. Sometimes you can find junk cars with good trucks and couplers in the $5 to 10 range at shows.

I have a few like that. Couldn’t bring myself to strip them…lol A MTH 19th Century Special run car I was going to repaint. Ended up detailing and adding some weathering instead… Tom Attachments:
