Like alot of others in this hobby I don't have unlimited money to spend on this hobby. But I do like steam engines, well some anyway!
As I was running my K-LINE UP Mikado I realized what a great looking and running engine it is. So checking online for the K-line engines available it seems there are still some great buys out there. I have seen quite a few of the Mikado in various road names going for $350-$400 in like new condition, for A 2-8-2 that seems reasonable in this market. 0-4-0's for between $300+ $340. Btw the ones I look for must have TMCC. The K-lines I have run great, are built like tanks. They don't have cruise control but run having no problems running around any radius track. The reason, build quality, and good mechanical tolerances.
Also looked at some of the Hudson's, great looking locomotives that are going for $550-$650+. A little high but the are the best looking Hudson's ever made in O gauge imo. Berkshires in various names and types are really nice but I believe a little over priced but still a great buy for some.
If your looking for A nice steam engine take a look at K-line engines.
