One of my favorite was the Northern Pacific Class Z-8 Challenger Why: Most advanced high speed steam locomotive built with all the modern engineering technology of the time. Also one of the most powerful steam locomotives built and with a cast silicon magnesium boiler. What is your most favorite prototype locomotive? fb.watch/sGM9Rd6MEx/

That's a tough question, really since there are 2 engines I admire and like the most, real and model versions. I really can't pick which of the 2 I like the most. There are always one or two of each on the layout, always. EMD F3s 2-8-0 Consolidation engines.

In the recent past I would have said the Commodore Vanderbilt or Dreyfus hudson but my tastes have evolved. I’ve loved the New York Central most of my life but in recent years I’ve become a big fan of contemporary railroading and the Florida East Coast Railway in particular. My favorite locomotive is now the FEC ES44C4 in the Champion paint scheme.

Mine would be the Hiawatha - love that cylindrical locomotive cab.

That's a hard one. 2-8-4 for freight and 4-6-4 for passenger but they are all great.

I don’t think that I have as good a reason for this as anyone else has given for their choice but my personal favorite prototype is the Southern Pacific cab forward. The reason(s) I can give are the engineering/innovation of the real thing and the quality of the tooling for Lionel’s AC-12, which I think is among the best Lionel has ever done. This is #4294 as preserved in the California State Railway Museum:This next set illustrates on the left Lionel’s original TMCC version of #4294 and the 2013 Daylight version #4275 which was beautifully made:The lower of the first two photos and the one just below it in the middle also illustrate an urban myth of my own invention. I have looked at so many SP cab forward photos that I have noticed some fairly odd things in their backgrounds. The first photo appears to include a guy equipped with a bug sprayer going about extermination business; the middle photo of cab forward #4274 in WWII troop transport service appears to show a large figure standing on the rear of the tender, who I have absolutely and positively identified as Bigfoot.

This is like picking your favorite child!
But I'd have to say the big, sleek and powerful brute, the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1. It looks so fast pulling a long string of gleaming shiny passenger cars.

The Milwaukee EF-3 boxcabs, since I saw these gigantic electrics everyday back in the 50's and 60's as they passed through my hometown of Renton, Washington. When MTH came out with the Milwaukee EF-3's it was a no brainer to pull the trigger and order them. Bill
