Nice station Steve & great feature Article, Congrats.
Thanks, Jim. I wasn't aware the issue had been released, but sure enough, issue 339 (Dec. 2024-Jan. 2025) was indeed out! Surprise!

I have a young couple with two little girls who've asked me to round up a train set for them for this Christmas. Easy enough...I started pulling stuff out of storage to make up a set. A good friend had sent me this modern era Lionel Columbia-type #1058 a while back when he downsized his collection; figured this would be an excellent place to start: I'm amazed how quiet this thing is compared to the pre- and postwar stuff I usually mess around with. Runs like a champ, smokes, whistles, blazing headlight, the girls are going to love it! Next, some rolling stock.

I'm pulling together the last bits I need to make this set I’ve been assembling; been trying to figure out what pack to send with it. Kent Schwartz is sending me a refurbished/tested postwar 1042 that would work, but I also have a 12885 from the late 1990's that might be better, read simpler (although it's only 40 watts). I've got an oval of track cleaned up, ready to go. I remembered that I had a shell for a 6464-510 somewhere and tore the place apart looking for it. When found, I swapped it out on one of the LRRC 6464-97 cars that we have. It's a repop of the 6464-510 that came in the Lionel "Girl's Set"...figured it would be appropriate: Could only be better if it had been pink. Got some testing to do, then we should be ready to pack this stuff up.

This gunmetal 1664E has been slowly creeping toward the top of the project pile. Besides being outrageously filthy, the motor needs a complete refurbishment, including a new collector assembly (always a fun job ): After disassembly and a bath, probably a guts-swap with one of the other 1664 locos I have, saving the original motor for later. The 1689T tender should be a simple repaint and reassemble. I've got a few cans of gunmetal to pick from; at least one of them should yield something close. Edit :: Turns out the pick-up assembly isn't broken, the springs intact; just had to straighten a few things out and install new sliding shoes:
Has a broken eccentric, though, and that'll need to be replaced.
