Bought a Proto sound standard gauge engine. I personally don't care for proto sound, It looks like I can just put my spare prewar Bild-A-Loco motor in place of where there motor and proto-sound is. My question is, it has proto-smoke unit, is there something like a diode that I can hook to it and get it to work with A/C voltage?

Does it not run now with proto sound in it?

I would just replace your battery... here is video to help you do that. I bought a 392 with an old white battery and changed it immediately with a BCR.

Yep, BCR's is the best way to update the batteries. I replaced the white batteries with BCR's in my PS-1 locos at their 5 year mark. Never had any issues and the locos are probably 25 years old now. Run them a couple times a year with no issues.

The PS1 smoke unit runs off of track power already BCR is ok but have had some issues with early PS1 locking in neutral I use these Tenergy Centura 9V NIMH Rechargeable Batteries, 200mAh Low Self-Discharge Square Battery. They are a fraction of the price of a BCR and work better

I'm trying to keep the smoke part if I can and change motor and electronics to prewar Lionel bild-a-loco. I'm hoping the smoke unit is not connected as part of the proto sound board.

I have a couple of MTH locomotives that are likely approaching battery replacement time. Dave

At first I did not see the point of your question as PS1 smoke units and some early Lionel smoke units run off of track power and can be connected direct to it (you'd need a manual switch for on/off options) but as far as I know on PS1 track power is "fed" through board pinouts that use a connector. I can't remember whether this gives any electronic control of smoke on/off or volume but I have connected PS1 smoke units independently of any board to track power. They just run continuously when there's power to the track unless you insert a switch.
It's probably more info than you need but there's a resource that shows the substantial variety of PS boards here: extranet.mth-railking.com/partsorder/sbs/1.pdf
It does not specify which pins on early PS boards connect to the smoke unit but you'll be able to tell on inspecting the unit and board. There are some references to a separate smoke unit power board but no explanation of whether it has any particular function.

Just an extra/final thought: If you find that your smoke unit is connected to the/a board it might be wise to trace the wires and check what AC (or DC) voltage is being output to the smoke unit. If it’s running on track power and you use conventional control the track voltage of course is variable and with it the smoke volume.

As I said in a previous post The smoke unit in PS1 uses track voltage The wire leads are connected to the board because the board controls the puffing of the unit with intermittent voltages sent You can connect ps1 smoke units directly to your pickup roller but you will not get the puffing smoke It will be constant smoke As some body stated it may take longer to heat up if you are using low speed but once it does you will get a steady smoke stream We did this with a PS1 Centipede and get choked up from all 4 smoke units sending a steady stream of smoke

Instead of swapping proto out and prewar Bilt-A-Loco in I'll see how it does for a while.
