It would not surprise me if any number of model train enthusiasts have some of their collection, or the empty boxes per Eric's Trains in storage units.
After having a storage unit for 3 months with the intro/teaser rate I received a post card today that said that my rent rate was increasing 50%.
I went on line and gave my move out notice. If not for the fact that the move out date was recorded incorrectly as 06/09 rather than the 07/09 that I entered; a phone call to the unit location would not have occurred.
The nice person heard my polite but firm statement that the increase was usury at the very least and unacceptable, they replied, let me see what I can do for you.
My new monthly rate was to be $185. However the same sized unit for a new customers was $30 per month less.
Abracadabra suddenly my cost per month dropped to $145 owing to my senior senile discount.
I accepted the more reasonable increase at least for another month as a move out by 7/09 was not that convenient.
So there is my cautionary tale to those with storage units for their trains or anything else. Don't accept the 30 day rate increase notice as gospel.

When we relocated to our current address I used a storage unit to hold seldom used stuff. Not any train stuff but the lumber from the large layout was loaded into the storage unit last. Rental was $75 per month, was very handy for the 6 months needed during relocation.

In my opinion storage units should only be used for temporary storage because of a move or job relocation. Otherwise you are paying rental on your own stuff. I know of more than one person who has at least one storage unit simply to house the trains they keep ordering.
I have a friend who had 2 garage-sized units plus a closet unit for several years. She eventually moved all of the stuff back to her house. It would have been more economical to get a dumpster in the first place and get rid of all of the broken crap she was hoarding.

Hey Runamuck......your storage fiasco couldn't come at a better time. Mrs. Rd Jimmy and I were considering getting a small storage unit. After reading your story and the wisdom of others on this forum, "paying/renting a storage unit to house your OWN stuff" got me thinking it IS TIME to downsize!

If you know how to play the game you can get about 3-4 months with the teaser rate before the rates start to go up. My 10X10 unit is chocked full of O/O27/O Scale that I amassed over the last few years before doing a U Turn back to MTH Tin Plate. If your needs are short term a storage unit is preferable to living with clutter while you figure out what to do. If you look at the unit rental rates you can usually find the sweet spot size to cost wise which is dictated by the vacancy rates of the various sized units at that facility. Fortunately trains are relatively light weight compared to boxes filled with vinyl LPs, which is my other cross to bear.
