Whose smoke fluid gives the best results in Lionel Legacy trains?

I use Mega Steam smoke fluid, but that's just me.

Todays Lionel fluid is excellent without any nasty smells.

I like to run prototypically correct early to mid 19th Century trains. Back then the cars were lubricated with tallow and fat, the passenger cars were hot and stuffy in the summer so many people would open the windows, take off their shoes and stick their feet out the window. As for the engines, they were usually burning wood. I finally found a custom smoke fluid at York several years back with the odors of rancid fat, smelly feet, and wood smoke. The trains look great when I run them and the odors are amazingly authentic but the running sessions are usually short because the stench is overwhelming!

Todays Lionel fluid is excellent without any nasty smells. Yes, the Lionel premium fluid is good and is what I use in my Lionel steamers but I prefer some holiday scent year 'round so it's the pine version for me. The downside is that for some reason Lionel fluid evaporates in the bottle so it has to be replaced more often than smoke fluids that will last for years in the bottle. Megasteam is somewhat more productive on the smoke volume front but not so much that it makes a critical difference to me. Overall however the old MTH Christmas Pine fluid has the most going for it if you are going to be using a lot of the stuff and it works just as well with Lionel smoke units as MTH's own, which are a different (two resistor) design.

Almost any brand will be ok, I use several and even mix it when the bottle gets low. I also like the MTH Christmas pine, one of my favorites.
