Now that METCA's custom run of a Lionel Legacy New Hope and Ivyland 2-8-0 Consolidation #40 has shipped to customers, did anyone buy it? What are your thoughts about it? Everything okay, works well? Please post pics, video if possible. Thanks

I’d like to read some reviews on this locomotive too. I like to buy engines that I’ve ridden excursions behind, I did experience the #40 once before, but I was on the fence since I heard about gear problems on the Consolidations similar to the Lionel K4’s.
It’s a problem that doesn’t appear for a while. Only way to really know is when someone opens it up to see if the gear is loose.

David, rockymountaineer special ordered this engine so hopefully we'll hear from him too about his experience with #40. David is known and valued for his reputation of giving no holds barred candid, frank opinions and comments on all things trains.

I already have the Lionel set of a few years back and was highly tempted by this offering, however I am a bit gun shy on new Lionel currently. However I am a big fan of METCA and their many varied and interesting offerings, especially their killer holiday engines and box cars.

Looks like a winner here. Dynamite paint job. Nicely detailed coal load in the tender. Excellent crawling speed — although I only ran the steamer on a simple loop of track. The real test will be sending a small locomotive like this through some fancy track-work. Although seriously… one of THE reasons I insisted on some simple loops in portions of my layout is especially for small steamers, switchers and maintenance units (i.e., ballast tampers, speeders, etc...) that sometimes lose power when moving slowly over complex track configurations.
From a graphics standpoint, it appears Lionel has FINALLY gotten our message that smoke boxes should be a dark satin gray/silver as opposed to the cheap and chalky primer gray they had been using on so many steamers that were otherwise nicely painted EXCEPT for the smoke box. For me, the chalky gray smoke box would be an instant deal-breaker. Thankfully that’s not an issue here — and hopefully won’t be with any upcoming Lionel scale steamers either.
Again… very nice smooth operation. So I’d write off any operational worries as “much ado about nothing”... at least nothing that presented itself initially. Smoke output from the stack is quite impressive. Whistle steam output is acceptable, but — like most steamers — largely dependent on the background to really help make the whistle steam stand out. With darker or solid backgrounds you’ll see smoke coming from the whistle more than when traveling in front of lighter or complex backgrounds.
My roster of NH&I RR coaches from Lionel’s set a couple of years ago are stored away for now. So this inaugural run of #40 had the loco hauling a string of large skeleton logging cars that Lionel produced back in the 2000’s decade. They’re still the best around IMHO.
All in all… a very nice job, Stu!!!
Here are some quick iPhone snapshots I captured tonight.

Great to hear! Other than the engineer looking a bit stoic looks like a home run except for my wallet! What next Stu, an after market label to mask Ivyland? BTW David, I do not recall seeing the background/backdrop for your layout before. The impressionistic skyline is very attractive. Did you do that yourself?

I wish I could take credit, but it was all courtesy of the magnificent artisans working for Dunham Studios back in the day. They were quite a crew of talented individuals.

Yes... Art Deco is the feel I was trying to achieve. Here are three more images that show more of the backdrop... featuring two familiar Lionel characters from the 1950's...

Took mine out the box, but it hasn't made it to the tracks yet. Overall it is very good. There are some varients which is expected. Paint and graphics are sharp. The feature set is good.
