I’d like to share a poem that my father had memorized as a youth and recited to us as kids; as a way of commemorating those in the U.S. armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
As Americans, we also thank and honor veterans, and those who serve in our military.

It's worth remembering the poem was written by a WWI veteran.
Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae was a Canadian poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during the First World War and a surgeon during the Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium.
He wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields" during the war and he died of pneumonia near the war's end.

Until 1971, it was known as "Decoration Day." My mother always referred to it as "Decoration Day." She lost a brother in WW1 I have the article from the newspaper and his medal that she kept until she passed away. The article says he was 17,in the 40th infantry 1918 and died from his wounds received in the Argonne Forest offensive. I was 16 in 1971 9th grade. That is very interesting.

I remember it being called Decoration Day. In 1968 congress passed a law that officially changed the name to Memorial Day and also changed the date observed from May 30 to the last Monday in May. The law took effect in 1971. I was 18 in 1968.
