According to TrainZ they sent a message a few weeks ago that the entire collection was up for auction after the April York. Just checked last night and there is only 13 separate auctions are left of the trains Chris sold to them. It seems his trains sold are selling briskly. Looks like it was a good move for both Chris and TrainZ!!!

So, are the buyers getting a good deal or are they paying a premium to own one of his locomotives which would seem kind of silly. I would think with Trainz basically being a middle man that wants to realize a profit over their purchasing price there would not be any bargains on the used locomotives.

Folks... I guess we just need to realize there's a very different breed of model train enthusiast out there nowadays, who relate to who and what they see on YouTube. And that drives their purchases. I would surmise it's mostly the younger crowd that comprises this new demographic, but there could be exceptions as well. Stuff that wouldn't interest us in the least interests them tremendously.
I recall a couple of years ago, when Legacy Station produced a custom-run Eric's Trains locomotive. The roadname was Eric's "Appalachian & Western", which in and of itself was fine. But the locomotive was also decorated with an "Eric's Trains" banner quite prominently. And I thought, "Who would want a locomotive with Eric's name on it?". Well as it turns out, Legacy Station reportedly sold a LOT more of those locomotives than Lionel's minimum production quantity (i.e., 40 units). I think the actual number sold was closer to 150, if I recall correctly.
So we might as well get accustomed to seeing more of this popularity among YouTube aficionados. These enthusiasts get easily star-struck... and then all bets are off. WE might not relate to this phenomenon in our little corner of the world. But I would conclude it's here to stay... at least for the foreseeable future.

But as time passes, these YouTubers also will, and who will remember. As many of us are older, we can remember the time when certain names on a product meant we needed to have. Then time went on and as these items were long gone from our childhood, many started collecting or accumulating these items and prices soared and they became collectables. But as time passed and newer generation came about, many did not recognize these names or heroes of our past. It was a couple of decades ago when any item of Tom Mix would bring hundreds of dollars, today, many are pennies of what was. The same for many items, even Basenall cards except for rare occassions dropped in value. Star War items were almost unaffordable decades ago, now many can be had for 10 cents on a dollar. Fame is fleeting. I know from experience.

And Now on to make my JDaddy Certificate of Authenticity! just add to each engine on Ebay and voilà... I am makin' money. Honestly though Chris didn't make any more money with this ploy and Trainz did take a risk with the purchase, so actually I am glad it worked out for everyone.

That should add at least $0.25 to the value of your items!

I guess it’s the same phenomenon as certain layouts that received heavy coverage in magazines like Model Railroader back in the day. I recall ‘80s HO layouts like the Virginian & Ohio that spawned custom-decaled cars and prolific articles - it seemed like the YouTube influencer of its day. I suppose there have been other star modelers and layouts but I haven’t paid attention to the magazines in a long time. These days it’s all about followers, likes and royalties from clicks…. and I pay even less attention to those.
If they’ve found a good wave to ride, I wish Chris and Trainz the best.

I’m glad both Chris and Trainz is having success with the sale of Chris’ trains. It’s good for the hobby being exposed to the public on YouTube. And if people are excited about buying trains that belonged to Chris who are we to judge their excitement or the method of selling?
I’ve met Chris briefly and I quickly realized what a gentleman he is and the high level of enthusiasm he has for O gauge trains. That said, I’ve been around the block a few times and I have my own criteria for buying trains. Talk about influencers, these O gauge Forums have influenced at least half of my collection!! So YouTube videos about the hobby are similar. The influencing depends on the product vs. my desire to buy it, whether it’s here or YouTube.
There are sooooo many videos of O gauge content and prototype trains to watch. Even prototype videos have influenced my purchases at times. My view is that I love to watch them. I wish I had time to watch them all. I think of them as entertainment, not as something to convince me to buy something.
Let’s just relax and enjoy the show!

Lots of uninformed buyers out there without any direction or cohesiveness to what they seek. That’s very true. Welcome to Capitalism!

Honestly its like most items out there you really need to beware of what you buy. I think a forum thread would be good to start would be MTH in general... what to buy, what not too, how to repair, upgrade, share your knowledge.
