Received from Mr Muffin last week the Monon RR Lionel hobo boxcar. The boxcar itself is terrific looking but the 2 hobos may be a tad to well dressed. One is reading a magazine and the other is the musician. There are two switches underneath the boxcar, a on/off switch and a min/max switch. As far as the sounds, the harmonica music is A-OK but the clikity clack is very loud and drowns out the harmonica music when the train is in motion. For me, one is enough, don't need another. Bill

You can turn the sound down using the min/max switch. I have a box car with box car noises like squeaks, cargo moving around etc. I think that what you get they are a little overpriced. I would not mind another one of different sounds. Guess ill look around.

The thinking behind the sound volumes could be that if standing at trackside when the car rolls past that the clickety clack sound would be louder than the harmonica.
Unless the hobo has a microphone and a power amp!

I could see the harmonica sound being a lot of fun.

I really liked the previously released sound cars. a couple of those in a line up 20 cars is nice. I have the hobo junction too that plays beautiful dreamer via a harmonica. It activates with a push button. Not sure for the price if I need them combined? I honestly thought I would see them second hand at York but nope, I guess they are keepers.

I have a couple of the sound cars and turned at minimum they sound great. Rspecially the squeling wheels on cutves and turn-outs.

The hobo boxcar also has some dialog…and it proves that the folks at Lionel have a sense of humor… ”more beans Mr. Taggart?” is a homage to the campfire scene in the Mel Brooks’ comedy movie “Blazing Saddles”. Btw, I have the latest Hobo boxcar, Monon, and I love it. At public modular displays people in the crowd are always pointing it out with a smile on their faces, plus alone in my train room it’s fun to listen too.

Bill Bill , I have some of the new hobo cars and I think that the harmonica sound is only activated when the boxcar is stopped or stationary. I motion they play the typical Lionel freight sounds suite.
