Good afternoon. When working on an airbrushing project, I will purchase a Williams SD45 shell and paint it into the road name I am interested in. The attached picture displays a shell with a circular hole in the roof directly behind the horn. Why the manufacturer designed the shell with this opening is unknown to me. I want to complete this project and cover the opening. Options considered are covering it with a beacon, bell, or inserting a dowel rod cut to size and painted. None of these options seems to work. I would welcome any suggestions.

I have done work were I removed a fixture, etc, in wrong place or I wanted it someplace different. It left a hole, round or near square, etc. What I used to fill in was automotive filler. Sanded to smooth and level, primed, and after painting never could see were I filled in. The secret is sanding also so its even with the surface.
Should add: any imperfection will show up when primed and once dry, you can sand and if filler shrunk, add more and level, let dry and harden and resand till you get that smoothness were it has disapeared once primed again.

Looks like a beacon was in the hole if you don't want that then I would just fix it like Josef posted!.

The shell was purchased on Ebay in the Reading Lines paint scheme. Although it has been awhile since I painted it, I believe that the prior paint scheme was factory paint. If I hadn't already repainted it (should have addressed the opening prior to repainting) I would fill it in with automotive filler. I will probably go the beacon route. The cheapness in me is reluctant to buy a beacon on Ebay, and pay more for shipping than what the beacon costs! Any other vendors that would be recommended that are more reasonable on shipping costs?

Unfortunately small items are gonna cost if shipped to you. Best to order a few of them then you will have them for the future.
Beings I can't drive anymore because of my right leg where the bones are cracking and until the doctors come up with a solution anything I need I have to have it shipped to me reasonable or not. I mean I can still walk with a cane but going anywhere is a hassle. Sometimes to get something you just have to do it if you wanted bad enough.

Try P & D Hobby Shop online. Unfortunately P &D Hobby shop is permanently closed. They have shut the doors and liquidated their stock... That must be correct as respects the former bricks and mortar store although I got some Precision Scale beacons from them last year and they are still advertised on eBay as well as the store's website. Anyway if the OP wants to say what is the size of the hole in the cab roof of his engine I'll see If I still have a spare beacon that will cover it that he could have for free.
P.S. On checking I found that I actually got some detailing parts from P&D via their website as recently as the start of this month! Maybe they are still liquidating the remaining stock but in any case they list a Precision Scale beacon as available online.

Thank you to all for your responses. I ordered a brass beacon from Overland Diesel on Ebay a couple of days ago. Won't receive it for another week. I had no idea that locating a beacon to cover the shell opening would be this challenging. Will see if this resolves the issue.

If the hole is too large, you can add super glue a bit of styrene to fill the hole then redrill a smaller hole to fit the beacon. Good luck sir and as my math teacher used to say "show us your work"!
