Back in the early days of MTH they used a super thin, super soft (synthetic I believe or maybe cotton) cloth to protect the paint from scratches/scuffing on their tinplate products and subsequently Lionel /AF branded products. That fabric was eventually replaced with a thin but not as thin closed cell foam sheet.
The problem is that on some of the earlier Tinplate Tradition styrofoam packing the cavity for the product (especially engines) will not accommodate the foam sheets properly. If the original protective cloth is no longer available the choice is just to use the plastic MTH/Lionel/AF logo wrap that swaddled the protective cloth. That does not seem to be the best solution to prevent paint damage.
Does anyone know what the earlier cloth version that MTH used to protect their paint was and where a person might be able to buy some of it?
If not any suggestions for a substitute cloth material?
Thanks

Hello runamuckchuck ! I personally re-use fine pure Cotton napkins or handkerchieves... It's indeed a prevention from scratches, and moreover a good protection against possible reaction from the foam of the box, with the paint of the model, by contact. Also re-usable are pure Cotton handkerchieves (obsolete by now and for long, for sanitary reasons), or even squares or silk scarves... But it's me, OK ? OACE

I've used microfiber shop towels when storing stuff in the past. They are soft, compact, there's little to no risk of marring the paint, and best of all, they are relatively inexpensive.
