Harborbelt70 and rtraincollector, I appreciate every thing you guys post, it is amazing what I have learned from you both on passenger cars and standard gauge, great stuff. Dave Thank-you. It has been a learning curve for me also. It all started about 4 years ago when a person had the red passenger cars on eBay, listed as O gauge. I realized they where Standard gauge when I got them, and did some researching on them a figured I got a deal in the half. so I put them in a boxed wrapped up and figure down the road I would do something with them, knowing we were looking for a new house. move forward and I bought a 390E (Prewar ) and some track for it. fell in love, then again by accident I bought a set of 418, 419,&490 passenger cars on the rough side, about a year ago. I knew they were standard gauge but had no idea they where almost twice as big as the red passenger cars ( withe and height ) I had a friend say let me have them for a bit and I will repaint them. This gives you an idea of condition. I took them apart for him, and kept the parts not to be repainted. and here is a pic of the finished product. bottom shelf. and this gives you an idea as of this past August. I have been collecting standard gauge a little over a year now, and here is a pic as of last August The brown set ( engine and cars ) third set up I sold to a guy who wanted them. but yes I have bought something to put in it's place, a remake of a freight set with a 318E, this set. Please excuse the condition of the tree, it was bought as a one year item as we knew what our cats would do, reshape it beyond repair. It's kinda a present for them, they really enjoy it.

Holy smokes. You have the standard gauge bug bad. Like myself, I went to York and the tinplate was everywhere and at great prices.

I want another 400E in conventional, would prefer black I already have the gray, not willing to pay what they want on ebay right now. A year ago I bought my on eBay for 1/2 what there asking, ( about $500 ) there asking $1000 and up. there is one about $900 but it has Proto-Sound. I do not want Proto-Sound.

Those prices are truly shocking and I think that in the face of them I'd be inclined to boycott purchasing BUT I am not in the market for such items. I think that there is a significant part of the O scale model train customer market that will pay almost whatever people ask to get an item they are after. We all know how obsessive the search for "must have" items can get, and IMHO it is part of what drives prices up.
What did we do in the days before there was an online national/global market? Went to York and foraged among the used items I guess.

I would do about anything to be able to go to York one more time, but it's not going to happen while wife is alive. She had a stroke right after ( she does well but long trips does her in, and she needs me for cooking most items. ( about 6 months ) we went the one time we did go. That and my PTSD ( I don't do well around crowds )

I'm very sympathetic to your situation. Despite it, I very much hope that you find what you are after. I count as a blessing the fact that I think I have found and got most of what I really wanted in terms of model trains and anything else is just icing on my little cupcake.
