We are still in the process of emptying our old house to ready it for sale. I had initially decided not to salvage wire from the abandoned layout in the attic. However, when I do go to the attic to get a box, inevitably pause to pull wire from under the layout. I have collected quite a bit – 20-gauge multi-strand wire – there is plenty left.
*When you have taken down or modified a layout, what have you salvaged?
When we packed up in Tampa over 30-years ago, I boxed the contents of my layout – including a Bascule Bridge (post war Lionel) with a Lionel #45 Gateman. Although, I have found the Gateman, the Bascule Bridge is missing. I have no idea where it may have gotten to. I have been hoping for decades it was hidden somewhere in the attic. Now that the attic is almost empty of boxes, my hope is fading of ever finding it. It is one of my train hobby disappointments.
*Have you ever lost track of an important train hobby item?

I have a habit that after I tore down a layout I would give away items I didn't think I needed for my next layout. Of course I always needed something I gave away which meant I had to buy it again. Track was number one. I gave away track, bridges, buildings, scenery to almost anybody who could use it.

Dave, you have a generous attitude in giving away items - of course, there will be something that you will have needed later. Except for the wire on my layout. there was nothing worth giving away. Alfred

Best to leave 20 gauge wire where it was. the strands break inside and lead to bad continuity. Now if it was 16 or larger, I try to repurpose. Its sooo expensive these days.
