In December Lionel celebrates their National train day. Today and every May, National (real) Train Day is recognized. In the era of synergy does it seem logical that Lionel might want to consider moving their celebration date for their model trains to the date where real trains are acknowledged?
That seems logical to me. How about you?

Just a guess, but I wonder if they didn't do it then as, it's national train day lets buy a train for Christmas and set it up to celebrate national train day also.

You would think they would but Don't count on them. They can't find their way to York anymore!

Dave Forget only Lionel for a moment although your observation certainly represents a large percentage of similar sentiments on this topic here on OGF and elsewhere. If you are a model train importer of any gauge, would it not be in your interests to consider a special limited issue car to ride the coattails of National Train Day? This strikes me as a mutual promotional opportunity that most sales departments would die for.

Maybe some of the mfgs did do a train day car of some kind in the past and it was not a great seller. Does anybody know? I have never seen one from any scale! I Dont usually buy those types of cars but that is just me.

Chuck, I think that rtraincollector is right on the money - have the day in December to boost Christmas sales. Alfred

Well, there’s this.
According to the rail passengers.org website: In 2008, Amtrak came up with the idea of National Train Day, celebrated on the first available Saturday closest to May 10th, and by 2012 Train Day had become a truly national event with big splashy bashes in DC, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and lots of fun National Train Day events at smaller stations around the country.
In 2015 Amtrak dropped Train Day from its official marketing budget which, to be fair, was smaller at the time than your local grocery store’s money for newspaper flyers. If things couldn’t be done for free or through press appearances – what they call “earned media” in the biz – it wasn’t going to happen.
So after 2015 it was up to rail organizations and rail fans to continue the tradition. I believe it was after this time that Lionel started their own “ train day” in December, as noted in the advertisement above.

Note per the flyer that Traindiesel posted it says "Lionel's National Train day" not National Train Day. So it was a promotional made up by Lionel promotion department most likely.

If it had been done by Lionel’s production department it would have read “Lionel’s Nationel Train Day”. Alfred

National Train Day in December is a holiday that is entirely created by Lionel marketing.

Ya'll seem to be talking about 2 different things:
National Train Day is in May and is a celebration of ALL things trains.
National Lionel Train Day is the first Saturday in December and is a celebration of Lionel trains.
2 different events.

National Lionel Train Day is the first Saturday in December and is a celebration of Lionel trains. 2 different events. Stu That is exactly my impression when I started this thread. My point being that the two events seem complimentary to some degree and that it might be worth considering supporting one another by choosing the same date or bookend a week with one event on one weekend and the other the following weekend. I will leave that to the marketing gurus of Lionel and or Amtrak.
