Mr Muffin is offering the Lionel Big Boy Super Set at a big time discount. Catalog price $4500, Mr Muffins price $3700. Heck of a deal if you have a big buck tax return coming to ya. Bill www.youtube.com/user/seayakbill

I wanna say that number is pretty darn close to the Charles Ro "early-buy price" that was offered before dealers needed to get their pre-orders into Lionel. It was one of those prices that wasn't advertised. Instead, you needed to call the store or add the item to your shopping cart to see the early-buy price.
Lionel claims enthusiasts are "demanding" larger and larger sets. But the healthy skeptic in me things that's all a bunch of marketing gibberish. As I've been saying in other threads tonight, there's only so many people that can jump at all these $1,800+ offerings... and then adding in a $3,700+ purchase on top of those other deliveries spread throughout the year is just asking for trouble -- even if you're blessed with deep pockets.

It is a stunning set. But it’s too large for my O-48 layout.

God bless those sitting on the fence in regards to this set. I'm on a relatively tight budget, and fortunately for me I only buy something if it meets a specific criteria (certain local roadnames, steam-only etc.)
I certainly hope that anyone who buys this set runs it. It's too nice of a set to have languish in their boxes.

I have been seeing on the secondary mkt. lots of premium items from the past that are new in the box never seen outside the box. Its such a waste to buy it and never take it out of the box to enjoy it. I get it that some people hope the item will Increase in price when they sell it. But they would be better off if they invested that money. Guess people have their own way but it seems to be a waste imo.

There seems to be a number of spring cleaning sales, parking lot sales, porch sales etc. from a number of dealers; more so than I recall from recent prior years. Remembering the rather large amount of pages from the last Lionel catalog of items remaining in stock, have we finally reached a saturation point for a broad swath of items?
Next time I sit on a fence, I will be certain it is a split rail variety not a picket. Ouch!

It is a stunning set. But it’s too large for my O-48 layout. To large for my layout with 0-72 curves.

Even though I have 072 curves I decided the Big Boy was too big for my layout. but its a BIG BOY....I don't run anything with min 072 curves, I would make an exception for.... the Big Boy....If Lionel would support it after the warranty period. I have 1 steamer and the rest diesels. I have always been able to figure out/fix issues with my diesels(including installing an ERR in a tmcc engine). Haven't had any issues with the steamer yet. I'm not sure how confident I would be in diaging/fixing a Big Boy. Anyway, I might not be able to have a layout in the future due to possibility of moving , so its just as well I haven't bought one.
