Good afternoon everyone,
So here's the deal; I have the MTH Premier Boxed El Capitan set 20-3153-1 with Protosound. It comes with a Powered A, Dummy B and Dummy A and four 15" aluminum cars. I also have 2 matching 2-car sets totaling 8 cars in the consist. Considering there's only 1 powered unit, I'm thinking it might be too much weight for just 1 engine to pull the consist so my thought was to add a POWERED B unit to assist in pulling power. MTH has made them over the years and I came across 1, item 20-2151-4, from around the same timeframe. The instructions mention that when you activate the Passenger Station Effects, the DCRU unit in the POWERED B will follow the same steps as the POWERED A however you cannot have the volts higher than 10 to avoid the motors in the B unit to start turning. I would hope the lead POWERED A and the POWERED B will act in sync during that event and not have a tug of war when exiting the feature and STAY in sync during its run around my layout. Has anyone else been in the position?

If you buy a powered B unit you have to lash it up or run in conventional so both units start up in forward and are in sync.

Are you looking to buy a powered B or convert what you have?
Just be warned, the trucks on the dummy units are most likely missing an important gear making the addition of a motor futile.
Since you have Protosound, a DCS lashup will not happen. MTH sold, "Slave Kits" (That's the name, so don't shoot the messenger) where in the 2nd diesel would be a slave to the A unit. From what I understand they are out of production and VERY hard to find.

It should pull eight cars no problem.

I'm sure the Powered A will pull the consist on it's own but another powered unit would help with the load. I just don't want to have to worry about the B unit going out of sync with the A since they were sold separately. MTH made AA sets with 4 motors but I'm sure the rear-facing A was a "slave" to the forward-facing A hence the 2 locos would always be in sync...

Protosound is just the version of the MTH sound system (usually the QSI sound system). So those locomotives, A or B units, will operate conventionally. They both would need to start neutral- forward and hope they run in sync. The single A unit in your set will pull the eight 15” passenger cars easily.
The Protosound 2 locomotives are the ones that DCS was installed in for the first time.
