Hello Guys ! I front a mishap with the LIONEL motor of my IVES-Williams #1694 : the two bakelite pinions are eaten...    I am certainly the responsible, as I dismantled the motor to clean the rotor collector and the brushes / guides / plate assembly, and did not take care enough about the timing (setup or synchronisation) of the gear teeth during reassembly. Lesson learned...  Where can I find such replacement pinions ?  I also have no clue about the parts number, nor the motor references... I'm sure that some of you knowledgeable members can help me, and direct me suitably...  Thanks in advance ! OACE |

According to Chuck Sartor, the Lionel/Ives #1694 has the same motor as the Lionel #262 steamer, so it should be an easy swap if you can find one. Check eBay...often there are motors on there and you might find the right one for your #1694 (without having to buy an entire loco). That might be an easier solution than trying to replace the gears, but I'll look around to see if anyone carries replacements. I'm going to York this week, so I'll keep an eye open.

Thank you again @healey 36 !  Let me know if incidentally you discover something helping... Yes, that's why I ended to discover too, browsing intensively the web : the motor of my IVES is a 257-258-252 Prewar locomotive motor (pic below)...  I will dismantle again my motor, and extract the faulty gears in order to measure their specs as best : maybe I'll be able to find some replacement... It also seems - but I am not sure at all - that the motor "type 8" found on the LIONEL 253 engine (pic below) is also the same, with the exception of the wheels, which are solid, and not spoken. This would enlarge the perimeter of search for compatible intermediate gears ? On the "type 8", the intermediary gears are metal - if they are the same as on the 262, that would be fine replacement parts, indeed !  ... While on the "type 6" - also found on the 253 - the intermediary gears are Phenolic, similar (?) to the ones of my faulty engine :  I think that 25 years ago, I bought two CDs grouping a bunch of LIONEL service instructions and parts lists... Maybe - if I retrieve those CDs - I could possibly have some additional input... Any additional clues from you OGF knowledgeable members is of course welcome !  OACE |

However, this is not always the case with all locomotives. For example, I have a 249 that has a factory 4-cycle e-unit, as would a 249E. Illogical, but it happens.

I see - Thanks @healey 36 : a priori, E would stands for E-Unit feature. Other than that, the transmission gears could be the same on the 262 and 262E motors ? According to a paper document that I have for years (printed from those famous CDs that I retrieved ) titled "replacement parts for O gauge locomotive prewar", for the intermediate gears, we have for the double tooth gears combined in one part - that I suppose to be called Compound Medium Gear in the document - the following references : Gear -- Compound Medium / for Super-Motors / part N° SLS-11Gear -- Compound Medium / for Bild-A-Loco / part N° 1-88So only 2 models of intermediate compound gear - I discard the non-compound ones (1) and the pinions (2) . But is my "262-like" motor a Super-Motor or a Bild-A-Loco ? This, I don't know - at least for the moment... Now let's take another route - if I look to the matching pictures of those parts (from trainz.com), here's what I have : For the SLS-11 For the 1-88 Looking to the compound gear of my #1694 motor (while still in good condition  )  I am probably right to think that the larger medium compound gear part N° SLS-11 is the correct one for replacement on my motor... Remember that I am located in France, healey36, and it takes time (and money !) to import parts from the USA... I purchased the set of gears plus some other little spare parts (18V bulbs, brushes...) and a convenient little wheel puller (PE Design). The delivery is announced at the end of May, that is to say in at least one month, so we are not in a hurry, aren't we ?  Of course, I'll keep the subject posted... Before discovering that marred gears issue, I added a set of blue leds inside the locomotive...   But given that the locomotive is unable to run for the moment, I could not see if it was nice-fun or ugly-kitsch looking...  OACE

International mail seems to be at a crawl these days, OACE, so patience is warranted. I'm waiting on a packet from Japan...these used to arrive within a week, now 2-3 weeks at best.

Guess what ? Now in France, for domestic shipping, that's now one week for a little parcel, instead of 2-3 days not so long ago... And France is not much larger than the average size of an US state, with 70M people here ! Sometimes, I think that we have become a NUC (New Underdeveloped Country)... OACE

Yes, I already could find the suitable SLS-11 replacement gears at trainz.com, but effectively, ttender do offers also the SLS-11. I discarded that supplier because initially, I did not know the reference of the part, until I retrieve my parts list and designation CDs that I bought 25 years ago, which provided me the correct #number. I wait for the delivery of those gear set, plus a little O train wheel puller and some 18V bulbs and brushes... OACE
