Thanks. I figured the numbers must be fairly low given the occasional "Only a handful will be made" promotional talk you sometimes hear. It would go a long ways toward explaining why the ending asking price is so high. The front-end cost for a production run is likely substantial, even if the dies are already on-hand. The one important factor to keep in mind with these custom-runs is they are often directly linked to catalog offerings — which is why some dealers can work out a relatively small number of units, since other roadnames of the same model are being offered anyway. That being said, some importers still have more stringent minimums than others. And from what I've heard, MTH's requirements are the most flexible.

On a related note for custom-runs... I just recv'd an email from Pat's Trains this afternoon announcing receipt of two custom-run MTH Premier Dreyfuss locomotives: Black Bonnet and B&O Cincinnatian, the latter of which is already sold-out... and the Black Bonnet has "a few remaining". Production quantities were 24 for each roadname. Had they been Lionel locomotives, the minimums would have been 40 per roadname.
I might have jumped on the Cincinnatian if they were available. But Pat also has the same color scheme offered as a C&O Lionel Legacy H-7 due later this year, which has been calling my name... since I have a full complement of B&O Lionel 18" aluminum passenger cars including a StationSounds diner which coordinates seamlessly well with a Legacy steamer vs. a DCS locomotive.

Sorry to hijack this tread... The trains are not getting more expensive. I think Atlas O prices are consistent with Lionel, but Atlas O usually delivers a better product. Our money has is just losing value, and will continue to lose value. Sorry I have bring this up, buts its reality, not politics. Here is a chart of the radical money printing (counterfeiting) scam which is used to finance the profligate deficit spending of the incompetent Federal government. fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MABMM301USQ189S
