It is appropriate to feature some space-related cars and accessories on Eclipse Day. I have a Lionel Satellite Launching Car (#3509, 1961-2); it is not readily available to photograph, so I present the Tandem Associates entry. What do you have in the way of ‘space’ cars and accessories? Alfred www.tandem-associates.com/lionel/lionel_trains_3509_flat_car.htm

I guess we really should start with the eclipse itself - got this in the back yard - unfortunately the power line sort of got in the way. It was interesting - the instant of totality you could hear cheering coming from houses all over the neighborhood - this followed by fireworks. ...and now for some cars and the Earth stomper

Then it adds value to the photo.

I totally forgot the eclipse was today, guess I should've went outside. Ok how many idiots had eye damage by looking at the sun without protection.

Were you in the path of totality david1? If you were you must have been in a fairly isolated place. We were in the path of totality and around here it was unreal. The whole area was expecting a huge surge in people. We had townships with normal populations of around 60,000 playing host to over 900,000. Many of the downtown businesses just told their people to stay home, all of the schools closed (one of the reasons for the school closings was to make sure the kids were at home where they were under the watchful eye of a parent), and practically every company providing public service of some kind (UPS, FedEx, Uber, etc.) notified any would be customer to expect some serious delays.
As for staring at the sun - I don't think that was much of a problem in this area. The public service announcements started early and never let up. Any number of medical facilities were handing out safety glasses as were other places of business and education. I watched the whole thing by punching a series of pinholes in a black piece of cardboard and looking at the projected images on another black piece of cardboard. I set the camera up on my tripod and pointed it in the direction of the sun (just off to one side). As the eclipse progressed I would check the viewfinder and move the camera just a bit. I forgot about the downward movement of the sun and didn't move my camera enough to get under the wires. When totality hit I just moved the camera over to a position I knew would focus the sun and tripped off a series of exposures - no looking through the viewfinder.

We were in the path of totality. The sun's corona and diamond was fantastic to see. For most folks its a once in a lifetime event.

Why back in my day we didn’t need states of emergency declared - we just made pinhole boxes or looked at eclipse reflections in a bucket of water… Anyway, to the subject! British Triang Hornby OO scale space trains, including the odd Turbo Car in the Battle Space! line (exclamation point included) www.brightontoymuseum.co.uk/w/images/Satellite_train_set_R397,_Triang_Hornby_(THMCat_1965).jpg tinyurl.com/2bjdtzhmDave

Dave (firewood), thanks for your interesting contribution – I was not aware of these. After reading the articles about NASA’s railroad, I thought about how cool it would be to model the Cape Canaveral area with its Indian River Bridge. Imagine how large a Saturn B rocket on its launch pad with gantry tower would be. There would have to be a flatcar with a Space Shuttle mock up on it. Alfred
