Anybody know a source for Traction tires for Lionel legacy diesels? Lionel doesn't have them.

I have used MTH traction tires, just make sure they are the same size. Diesels are usually the same size but always check they fit in the groove of the wheel.

Sorry to be late to this thread but instead of Lionel have you tried eBay? I just checked and found numerous ones depending on when the loco was made. It's been a while since I needed to stock up on diesel tires but eBay is where I found them when Lionel did not have the right ones in stock.

Do you really need them?

These videos show that on a table based layout with reasonable grades the engine pulls fine without traction tires. So why are they there? I would say that they are needed if you used a Lionel or MTH trestle set where the grades are fairly steep. On my layout there is a 6" rise on a track segment roughly 8' long. My Williams PRR Alco with eight O gauge aluminum passenger cars makes it fine but without the traction tires I have my doubts. On most applications though I would say they are not needed. Thanks Ron for the videos.

At one time 3rd Rail used to put grooves on a couple of the drive wheels. Then they dropped the grooves and went to traction tires. I asked someone at their booth at York but did not get any explanation as to why they changed

Use MTH tires. There's a chart floating around somewhere of all the different sizes. Not as thick, better made, and should last longer. Pick the tire that matches your model or size.

Thanks Ron for the videos. Even on a flat stretch of track I have found that a diesel with a plastic body might start spinning its wheels without proper traction tires IF it is pulling a significant load. The example I most remember is an early Legacy E-7 with a dummy engine behind and 7 scale length aluminum passenger cars. I replaced the stock tires on the powered A unit with new MTH ones and the problem was solved.

If you find that you are constantly needing to replace your traction tires, check your track work. Misalignment of track sections improper joints can all lead to traction tire failure.
Many people who use either Gargraves or Ross track don’t know that there should not be any gaps between track sections. Gaps in this type of track will lead to premature traction tire failure.
