One of the most popular trespassers on YouTube. With all his health issues over the past few years, I was amazed he was still getting out there. Let’s hope he’s just in a bad cell area awaiting to jump his next train.

Sadly his body was found by fishermen in a lake near his home. Godspeed Hobo Shoestring.

Too bad, I was hoping he would be found alive. RIP Shoestring. Peace and comfort to your family.

I followed Mark Nichols (Hobo Shoestring) 0n his You Tube videos. He chose to live a hard life jumping on freight trains and going all across the USA in all four seasons. He basically camped out all the time on grainers, gondolas, box cars and in the woods waiting for the next train. He always braved the elements was only 53 but looked like a 80 year old person surviving on fast/junk food most of the time. He was a fascinating man and in the end his health gave out, He died as he chose to live as a true RR hobo. I look at my cop and hobo car and thats him. Mark did have some model trains in his apartment and they show in some of his videos. R.I.P. Mark.

I really enjoyed watching his videos. He came across as a super nice guy. I figured most Hobos were homeless when not riding, and I was very surprised to see he had a pretty nice apartment, also had lots of gadgets, a cell phone, wind powered cell phone chargers, pretty nice gear, and fans would send him toy trains and railroadiana. Shoestring was very thankful for it all.
He was humble, he built quite a YouTube channel, had 204,000 subscribers. I think he took the Hobo lifestyle to a high levels by broadcasting the ins and outs of how it’s done, along with some comedy. A few years ago he went to a Hobo meet up and they annually award a Hobo with the Hobo King title for a year, he came in second place, should have won. He took the loss in stride and was very nice to the winner.
