I have my MTH Railking RS-11 Delaware and Otsego and my Batten Kill RS-11 RS-11 . Question: did they run long cab forward or short cab forward? There are no little engineers in the cab to point me in the right direction!

Not sure but after a quick search they seem to have used them in both formats. Long nose forward and Short nose forward. Here are some pics on this web site for ya. ginosrailpage.org/DOS/

I just realized I made a mistake, these locomotives are RS-3s

Running in either direction was no problem, but being first-generation diesels the original setup was long hood forward. Ex-steam engineers might have had a comfort level with the long hood as the front. I believe Southern and Norfolk&Western ran long hood forward with SD45s. The short end hood was also full height. The practice was explained in Trains mag here: www.trains.com/trn/train-basics/ask-trains/running-long-hood-forward/I tend to run my Williams RS-3 long hood forward most of the time just because I like to, but my engineer is facing the wrong way lol. It all depends on the railroad, as stated above some railroads ran long hood forward to make it more familiar to steam engineers but as time went on the short hood made more sense to the railroads.

Look on the running boards of the engine. There is usually an F or R for front or rear. they were run both ways. Some of the F/R markings was for maintenance and logistics of train assembly
