I've thought about doing something like this. Looks like they beat me to it. I'm sure it could made to work with O gauge. This is a great idea and works quite well in the video. It's designed for DCC but can be configured by a button on the board.
Would you do it ?

Nice product! When I first saw the thread's title, I thought the product might be intended to sense motion in order to activate lighting *on the layout*, which got me thinking about layout accessories activated by the presence of a viewer, much as I did a while back with sound file activation: I started to mull over what layout lighting might benefit from the ability to be activated in the presence of a viewer (the bundle I used for the camping sounds installation is specifically designed for playing custom sound files when it detects motion, but I believe similar hardware is available that could control other devices, and it might be possible to put together a DIY alternative to the (no doubt more expensive) product). Of course, the *actual* topic and associated video is about a new product designed to control lighting in DCC-activated rolling stock when it detects motion (or the absence of same) by the consist. My immediate Marx-centric postwar conventional control instinct was to think, "Why not just use the track voltage (or absence of same) to detect motion?", before immediately realizing the track is *always* powered with DCC and other command control systems IIRC, thus creating the need for some other motion-sensing method. So, it's unlikely I will be in the market for the specific product on my conventional control layouts, but the idea of motion-detecting activation for other accessories is a concept that might find its home on my layouts somewhere down the line!

Neat. It would be cool to have it facing the outside of the layout so someone walking past it would trigger it.

Neat. It would be cool to have it facing the outside of the layout so someone walking past it would trigger it. If you're referring to the camping sounds installation, yes, that's exactly how it operates. In fact, I had to 'hide' the sensor (covered with translucent plastic film) inside the 'hot tub' (a decorated section of discarded caulk gun tube) to avoid activation every time the trains went by, but it *will* be triggered by anyone passing anywhere near the corner and above the layout.

The photocell relay's are pretty cheap and work quite well. Though ambient lighting can have an effect on the performance. I've used them on our modular layout but the problem is that you never know how well it will work.
I like the idea of the proximity sensor. They do sell them on the website but are about $50 each. Then again they are plug and play. Nice for people who don't want to roll their own.
I may look at hooking up a proximity sensor to an Arduino. If the price is right it might be worth perusing.
I just thought the motion lighting on the passenger cars was a great idea and though I would share..
