Good afternoon everyone,
I recently purchased a Williams Crown Edition Brass N&W J and was considering painting the metal accents BLACK i.e. drive wheels, side rods, etc. Can anyone suggest what kind/brand of paint and perhaps a quick walk-through of how to do it cleanly, not sloppy? Thank you.

I've had good luck with black acrylic paint. The cheap brand from Michaels works OK. When painting drive wheels, I make sure to clean the surface with some alcohol first. Then I put the engine on rollers, power it up, and get the wheels rolling slowly. I use a small brush to apply black paint to the rims, letting the rotating wheel do all the work. 2 to 3 layers per wheel should do it.

Thanks for the tip. Looks like I'll be taking a trip to my local Michaels. I would think a semi-gloss or flat would be appropriate. What did you use and were you happy with the results?

I've used both semigloss and flat. I think I liked flat better, especially for drive wheels.

I airbrush when I can and use Tamiya or Tru-Color. I hand painted the wheels, white strip, and grab irons and used plain Testers white. Here is a before and after.

Here's my L-1a that a good friend shot with Tru-Color (I'd have never had the guts to do it myself): It's my only weathered loco (if you exclude the dusty ones up on the shelf). I asked him to make it look like the last day it was in service...I think he succeeded.

healey36 - WOW that looks GREAT! I don't have the guts either but my fellow hobbyists love to take on a challenge so I'll ask them that way, liability shifts to them.
